Spanish did not become part of their lives through formal lessons or strict classroom routines. Instead, it became a natural part of their everyday world thanks to María Teresa Turrión Borrallo, the Spanish nanny who has quietly played an important role in their upbringing for many years.
Originally from Palencia, Spain, María Teresa joined Prince William and Princess Kate’s household in 2014, shortly after the birth of Prince George. A graduate of the prestigious Norland College — known for training some of the world’s most respected nannies — she quickly became a trusted figure throughout the childhoods of George, Charlotte, and Louis.
From royal tours and family outings to major celebrations, María Teresa has remained a constant presence by their side. Earlier this year, her years of dedication were officially recognized when she received the Royal Victorian Medal, honoring her special service to the Royal Family.
But introducing Spanish into the children’s lives was not a random choice.
According to reports over the years, Prince William encouraged María Teresa to speak Spanish with George from an early age, allowing him to naturally absorb the language rather than simply study it as an academic subject.
One of the first public hints about George’s Spanish skills came in 2018, when Princess Kate revealed that her eldest son could already count from one to ten in Spanish. She praised María Teresa for helping him develop the ability.
Charlotte also reportedly began picking up Spanish words and phrases at a young age, while Prince Louis started learning simple expressions during his toddler years.
Although the Royal Family has never officially confirmed that all three children are fluent in Spanish, bilingual exposure has clearly become an important part of their childhood.
Royal experts have often highlighted that María Teresa uses Spanish during everyday routines, allowing the language to become something familiar and natural rather than a traditional lesson.
The choice reflects Prince William and Princess Kate’s modern approach to parenting. Alongside encouraging outdoor activities, cooking, and giving their children as normal a childhood as possible despite their royal status, they have embraced the lifelong benefits of learning another language.
As George, Charlotte, and Louis continue growing toward their future royal roles, their Spanish skills could become an unexpected advantage. With more than 500 million Spanish speakers worldwide, the ability to communicate in the language may prove valuable during future overseas visits, diplomatic engagements, and royal duties.
