The Duggar family has faced another major scandal this year, but critics say something about the family’s response is raising even more questions: why does everything appear to be continuing as though nothing happened?
Joseph Duggar was arrested earlier this year after being accused of molesting a 9-year-old girl during a 2020 family trip. He is awaiting trial while facing criminal charges, and the allegations have once again placed the Duggar family under intense public scrutiny.
Yet on social media and in their public appearances, some members of the family appear to be carrying on with everyday life.
Family celebrations continue. Social media posts continue. Business ventures continue. And for critics who have followed the Duggars through years of controversy, the apparent return to normal has become difficult to ignore.
The reaction has been especially strong because this is not the first time the family has faced a devastating scandal involving one of its sons.
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have previously stood by their eldest son, Josh Duggar, through an even more serious criminal case. Josh was convicted of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material and is currently serving a federal prison sentence.
Now, with Joseph facing allegations of his own, critics are questioning whether the family’s approach has changed at all.
When Joseph’s arrest became public in March, his father appeared to reach out with a message of support.
In an email sent to Joseph, Jim Bob reportedly expressed his love for his son while acknowledging that Joseph had made what he described as “terrible decisions.”
The message also emphasized faith and forgiveness, with Jim Bob telling his son that God would help him through what could be a long road ahead.
For critics, that message was revealing.
Rather than distancing himself from Joseph, Jim Bob appeared to be emphasizing family loyalty and religious forgiveness — something critics say has been a recurring theme whenever one of the Duggar children becomes embroiled in controversy.
The situation became even more complicated when Joseph’s wife, Kendra Duggar, also became involved in a separate legal matter.
Kendra turned herself in on unrelated child-endangerment charges shortly after Joseph’s arrest. Michelle Duggar was reportedly there when Kendra was released from jail, another sign to critics that the family was closing ranks around the couple.
To many longtime Duggar observers, the response feels familiar.
The family has repeatedly been accused by critics of prioritizing loyalty, privacy and maintaining the family’s public image during times of crisis.
That perception has only intensified because Joseph’s arrest comes years after the Josh Duggar scandal forced the family to confront some of its most painful controversies in public.
One critic on Reddit questioned why the family still seemed to be behaving as though everything were normal after yet another major scandal.
The commenter suggested that the latest situation should have caused some of the Duggar children to seriously reconsider the beliefs and practices they were raised with.
Other critics were even more blunt.
Some argued that the family’s long history of dealing with controversy may have changed what feels “normal” to them. One commenter characterized the family’s environment as one in which abuse and exploitation had become so familiar that members might no longer react to scandals in the same way outsiders would.
Those comments, of course, represent the opinions of online critics and not established facts about what individual Duggar family members privately believe or feel.
And that distinction is important.
A family member posting a vacation photo, attending a celebration or continuing with work does not necessarily mean they are unaffected by a crisis happening behind the scenes.
In fact, Joy-Anna Duggar recently offered a very different glimpse into the family’s private emotional state.
Speaking with her sister Jinger Duggar on Jinger’s podcast, Joy-Anna described the period following Joseph’s arrest as “the hardest time I’ve ever gone through.”
She said that every day felt heavy and that she had struggled with how much of the situation to discuss publicly.
Joy-Anna also explained that repeatedly talking about the scandal could make it feel as though the family was constantly reliving it.
That perspective complicates the idea that the Duggars are simply ignoring what happened.
At least some family members have acknowledged that the situation has been painful, complicated and emotionally exhausting.
Still, critics continue to wonder what is happening behind closed doors.
One factor they point to is the family’s complicated financial structure.
Jill Duggar Dillard has previously spoken publicly about disagreements with her parents over money and compensation, including allegations that financial dependence was used as a source of control within the family.
Because of those revelations, some critics speculate that financial ties could make it difficult for adult Duggar children to completely separate themselves from their parents or challenge the family’s established approach.
But again, what individual family members are currently experiencing financially is not necessarily known.
The Duggars’ social-media presence also provides only a limited window into their lives.
A cheerful Instagram post does not reveal what someone may be dealing with privately. Likewise, silence about a scandal does not necessarily mean acceptance of it.
The family has also demonstrated in the past that major disagreements can remain hidden from the public for years.
Jill’s eventual estrangement from parts of her family became much clearer only after she began speaking publicly about her experiences.
That history has led some observers to wonder whether other Duggar children may also be questioning their upbringing privately — even if there is no visible sign of it online.
For now, however, there is no clear answer.
Joseph remains at the center of an ongoing criminal case, while his family continues navigating the public attention surrounding the allegations. His arrest has reopened old wounds for some Duggar siblings and reignited a debate that has followed the family for years: where does family loyalty end, and where does accountability begin?
The Duggars may appear to be moving forward with their lives, but that does not necessarily mean the controversy has disappeared.
If anything, the latest scandal has once again forced longtime followers to look beyond the family’s carefully maintained public image and wonder what may really be happening behind the scenes.
