Dollar General Manager Killed After $1.58 Purchase Turns Deadly, Family Left Heartbroken

What should have been an ordinary transaction at a Georgia Dollar General ended in tragedy after a store manager was fatally shot during an apparent dispute over a purchase totaling just $1.58.

The victim, 44-year-old Alexis Hill, was a mother of three and grandmother of two who was remembered by family and friends as a hardworking woman devoted to her loved ones and her job.

Routine Purchase Takes a Tragic Turn

According to investigators, the incident happened shortly after 10 a.m. on June 23 at a Dollar General store on Victory Drive in Columbus, Georgia.

Authorities say a customer, later identified as 33-year-old Jerome Willis, approached the register to purchase a package of hamburger buns costing $1.58.

Officials allege Willis handed Hill two crumpled one-dollar bills. As Hill straightened the cash to complete the transaction, investigators say Willis stepped away briefly before pulling out a firearm and shooting her. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but Hill was pronounced dead less than an hour after the shooting.

Suspect Located Less Than Two Hours Later

After leaving the store, Willis fled the area, prompting a large police search.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Columbus police located him in a nearby parking lot roughly an hour later.

Officers issued verbal commands, but investigators say Willis refused to comply. Police then deployed a K-9 in an attempt to take him into custody.

Authorities allege Willis fired at the police dog and pointed his weapon toward officers. Officers returned fire, striking him multiple times. Willis was pronounced dead at the scene. One officer and the K-9 sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Victim and Suspect Were Strangers

Family members told local media that Alexis Hill and Jerome Willis did not know each other before the incident.

Friends described Hill as someone who always brought positivity to those around her and took great pride in her work.

“She loved that job,” one longtime friend recalled while speaking to local reporters, remembering Hill as kind, hardworking and always willing to help others.

Family Mourns Sudden Loss

Hill’s brother has launched a fundraiser to assist with funeral expenses and support the family during the difficult weeks ahead. In the fundraiser, he described his sister as a beloved mother, grandmother and family member whose unexpected death has left relatives devastated. Hill is survived by her three children and two grandchildren.

Investigation Continues

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry into both the fatal shooting inside the Dollar General and the subsequent officer-involved shooting that resulted in the suspect’s death.

Authorities have not released additional information about what may have motivated the initial confrontation.

As investigators continue reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements, the community is left grieving the loss of a woman whose life ended during what appeared to be an ordinary workday over a purchase worth less than two dollars.
