Josh Duggar is reportedly directing fresh criticism at his parents from behind bars, accusing Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar of caring more about protecting the family’s public image than addressing problems within their own household.
According to messages obtained by PEOPLE, the former 19 Kids and Counting star expressed frustration with his parents while serving his federal prison sentence, claiming they have never fully accepted responsibility for decisions he believes affected his life.
The messages reveal growing tension within the Duggar family years after Josh’s criminal conviction.
In a series of text messages sent to his mother, Michelle Duggar, Josh wrote that he believes his parents have consistently avoided acknowledging their own role in family conflicts. He said he was deeply disappointed that they would not accept criticism or admit mistakes that he believes had a lasting impact on his life. Rather than taking responsibility, Josh suggested his parents continued to place the blame solely on him while refusing to examine their own actions.
One of Josh’s strongest accusations centered on how the Duggar family handled public controversies throughout the years. According to the messages, he believes preserving the family’s reputation and protecting their television career often became a higher priority than maintaining healthy relationships within the family itself.
Josh claimed that public statements and efforts to protect the family’s image were repeatedly placed ahead of family members, adding that he felt Michelle frequently focused more on public perception than addressing private issues. The comments offer a rare glimpse into what appears to be lingering resentment toward the family’s handling of numerous public scandals.
Despite his conviction, Josh again insisted he is innocent. According to the reported messages, he maintained that illegal child sexual abuse material discovered on a computer at his former used-car dealership had actually been placed there by a coworker rather than downloaded by him.
Josh told his mother that she was blaming him without knowing what he described as “the truth,” repeating claims he has made previously while continuing to reject responsibility for the crimes that resulted in his imprisonment. His conviction came after federal prosecutors argued that he knowingly downloaded and possessed illegal material over several days in 2019.
The messages also reflected Josh’s frustration with his current circumstances as he serves his sentence. While acknowledging that he was not blaming his parents directly for his imprisonment, he expressed resentment over watching life continue for the rest of the family while he remains incarcerated.
He encouraged Michelle to reflect on the family’s past decisions and make changes that could prevent future generations from experiencing similar problems. According to the reported exchange, Josh urged his mother to recognize what he believes was her role in family dynamics and to protect younger family members moving forward.
Rather than responding point-by-point to Josh’s accusations, Michelle reportedly answered with messages expressing her love and support. She also shared encouraging messages she had received from others, avoiding any direct discussion of his claims regarding the family’s priorities or public image. Her response reflected the supportive stance she has generally maintained toward her eldest son despite his legal troubles.
Josh Duggar was found guilty in December 2021 of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material after a federal investigation into activities connected to a computer at his Arkansas used-car dealership. He was sentenced in May 2022 to 151 months in federal prison and continues serving that sentence while pursuing multiple unsuccessful legal challenges to overturn his conviction.
Although he continues to maintain his innocence, federal courts have repeatedly upheld his conviction, leaving him to serve the remainder of his sentence while the latest family tensions continue to emerge through reported prison communications.
