Jana Duggar has publicly addressed the criminal case involving her brother Joseph Duggar for the first time, saying the allegations left the entire family stunned and insisting they had no advance knowledge of the accusations before they became public.
In a statement shared on social media, the former Counting On star described the situation as both heartbreaking and deeply painful, calling it one of the most difficult moments her family has faced in recent years.
According to Jana, the Duggars were caught entirely off guard when news of Joseph’s arrest surfaced.
“We had no prior knowledge of these allegations,” she wrote, emphasizing that the family learned about the accusations only after they became public.
Jana said the news came as an enormous shock, adding that family members were struggling to process what had happened. She described everyone as “deeply saddened and heartbroken” while acknowledging the devastating impact the allegations have had on everyone involved.
Although Joseph is her brother, Jana made it clear that her sympathy extends first to the alleged victim.
“Our hearts are with the child who has been harmed,” she wrote. “This is a grievous and unacceptable wrong.”
Her statement echoed comments made by several other members of the Duggar family in the weeks following Joseph’s arrest, as relatives have increasingly spoken publicly about the case while legal proceedings continue.
Joseph was arrested in March after authorities in Bay County, Florida, accused him of sexually abusing a child during a family vacation in Panama City Beach in 2020.
According to investigators, the alleged victim—now 14 years old—told police the incidents occurred when she was only 9 years old. Court documents allege Joseph repeatedly invited the child to sit on his lap before later asking her to sit beside him beneath a blanket, where he allegedly touched her inappropriately on several occasions.
Investigators also allege that Joseph later apologized and that the conduct stopped after those incidents. The case remained unreported for several years before the girl’s father confronted Joseph earlier this year. Authorities claim that conversation ultimately led to a criminal investigation and Joseph’s arrest.
Joseph has denied all allegations against him and has entered not guilty pleas to the Florida charges. After being taken into custody, he was released on a $600,000 bond and remains free while awaiting trial.
Jana is not the only member of the Duggar family to publicly respond to the case.
Her sister, Jill Duggar Dillard, and brother-in-law Derick Dillard previously released a statement saying they were “shocked and heartbroken” by the allegations. The couple strongly condemned child abuse and expressed support for the alleged victim while asking for privacy as the family continues navigating the emotional fallout.
Another sister, Jinger Duggar Vuolo, has also spoken publicly about the emotional toll the investigation has taken on the family, describing the situation as devastating while acknowledging how painful it has been for everyone involved.
Meanwhile, family patriarch Jim Bob Duggar and matriarch Michelle Duggar have said they remain focused on supporting Joseph’s wife, Kendra Duggar, along with the couple’s four children as the legal process unfolds. Their statement also expressed prayers for the alleged victim and everyone affected by the case.
The family’s challenges have expanded beyond Joseph’s Florida prosecution.
In Arkansas, both Joseph and Kendra are facing separate criminal charges involving second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree false imprisonment. State authorities have repeatedly stated that those allegations are unrelated to the Florida molestation case.
Kendra has pleaded not guilty to the Arkansas charges and has continued appearing in court as those proceedings move forward independently. Joseph has likewise denied the Arkansas allegations.
The multiple criminal cases have placed unprecedented attention on the Duggar family, whose lives were previously documented for years on TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On. Once known for presenting a large, faith-centered family image, the Duggars have found themselves confronting another high-profile legal controversy that has prompted several relatives to publicly distance themselves from Joseph’s alleged actions while expressing compassion for the reported victim.
As prosecutors continue preparing for Joseph’s trial, Jana’s statement underscores the emotional impact the allegations have had within the family.
