Court filings connected to Joseph Duggar’s criminal case reveal that he received a message of encouragement from his brother-in-law, Austin Forsyth, shortly after being arrested on child molestation charges earlier this year.
The email exchange, included among recently filed legal documents, shows Austin reaching out to Joseph while he was being held at the Washington County Detention Center in Arkansas following his March arrest.
Austin, who is married to Joseph’s sister Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth, made it clear that he did not want to discuss the details of the criminal case through email. Instead, he encouraged Joseph to rely on his attorney for legal matters while offering emotional and practical support to Joseph’s family.
In his message, Austin wrote that he loved Joseph and reminded him of his Christian faith, saying that God continued to work even through difficult circumstances. He also noted that he believed the family had grown closer over the previous year and a half for a reason, adding that Kendra Duggar would need support during the legal ordeal.
Austin assured Joseph that he and Joy-Anna were already helping Kendra and intended to continue doing so while Joseph remained behind bars.
Joseph later responded to the email, expressing gratitude for the assistance being provided to his wife. He thanked Austin and Joy-Anna for standing beside Kendra, writing that their support meant a great deal to him during an extremely difficult period.
He also said he was thankful for the number of relatives and friends who had stepped in to help Kendra following his arrest, adding that he appreciated having family members willing to support her while he dealt with the criminal proceedings.
The correspondence offers a rare glimpse into how members of the Duggar family reacted privately in the days following Joseph’s arrest, suggesting that at least some relatives continued to provide assistance despite the serious allegations against him.
Joseph was arrested in March after authorities in Bay County, Florida, accused him of sexually abusing a child during a family vacation in Panama City Beach in 2020.
According to investigators, the alleged victim—now 14 years old—reported that the incidents occurred when she was just 9 years old. Court records allege that Joseph repeatedly asked the girl to sit on his lap before later inviting her to sit beside him beneath a blanket, where he allegedly touched her inappropriately on multiple occasions.
Investigators have also alleged that Joseph later apologized to the child and that the inappropriate conduct stopped afterward. Years later, the girl’s father confronted Joseph, and authorities claim that conversation ultimately led to the criminal investigation and his arrest.
Joseph has denied all of the allegations and entered not guilty pleas to the Florida charges. Following his arrest, he was released after posting a $600,000 bond and continues to await trial.
In addition to the Florida prosecution, Joseph is also facing separate criminal charges in Arkansas. Prosecutors have charged both Joseph and his wife, Kendra Duggar, with multiple counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree false imprisonment. Officials have stated that those allegations are unrelated to the Florida molestation case.
Both Joseph and Kendra have pleaded not guilty to the Arkansas charges, and those proceedings remain ongoing.
Since the investigations began, the Duggar family has faced intense public scrutiny as multiple relatives have publicly commented on the allegations while others have remained silent. The newly disclosed email exchange suggests that, despite the legal controversy, Austin and Joy-Anna chose to focus on supporting Kendra and her children rather than discussing the criminal accusations directly with Joseph.
Joseph is scheduled to continue appearing in court as the Florida case moves through the pretrial process. Prosecutors are preparing for trial, while his defense team continues filing motions and challenging aspects of the state’s case.
For now, the emails remain one of the few publicly available examples of private communication between Joseph and members of his extended family following his arrest, highlighting both the emotional strain placed on those closest to him and the efforts by some relatives to provide support to Kendra as the legal proceedings continue.
