Luc Besson’s 2014 sci-fi thriller Lucy became a global phenomenon, earning $469 million worldwide on a $40 million budget and leaving audiences with one of the most debated endings in modern blockbuster cinema. Despite persistent fan demand and EuropaCorp’s confirmation in 2017 that a script was completed, a sequel has never materialized, and director Luc Besson himself has repeatedly expressed surprise at reports claiming the project is in active development.
As of June 2026, Lucy 2 has not been officially confirmed by any studio. Besson stated in a March 2024 interview with The Playlist that reports of the sequel were “news to him” and that he had never been approached to direct or develop a follow-up. The primary creative obstacle remains the original film’s definitive ending, in which Lucy transcended physical form and merged with the universe itself, making a traditional sequel narrative extraordinarily difficult to construct. The question of whether Lucy could return in her original human form is one that the source material does not easily answer, since the character essentially became omnipresent consciousness. Scarlett Johansson has expressed interest in exploring where Lucy’s consciousness went, but no formal discussions have been reported. Morgan Freeman’s character, Professor Samuel Norman, was the focus of a spinoff television series announced in late 2022, though no updates on that project have emerged in over two years. EuropaCorp’s financial restructuring following the failure of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets further complicated any sequel momentum.
