The man at the gas station had a broad, sunny face, and he was the only friend Diana had left. He defied Dominic’s orders to help her, dropping her and the children outside of Silver Hollow with nothing but a warning to stay low and out of sight. That was three days ago. Three days without food.

Now Diana woke stiff on a cold park bench, pulling her children closer against the October chill. Amy and Oliver slept curled against her like question marks, their small bodies gaunt, their eyes too large for their thin faces. She blinked back tears as her stomach clenched. She had to be strong.
No one else would be. Yesterday, she had seen something in the eyes of a stranger at the playground. A man with amber eyes who looked at her with what she thought was recognition, a shared understanding of quiet desperation. But then he had turned away, taking his daughter with him.
Just like everyone else. When morning came, Diana found a package wrapped in brown paper on the bench beside them. Inside were still-warm containers of scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, and fruit, plus three breakfast sandwiches and bottles of juice. A note in blocky handwriting read, simply, “For later.
”
Oliver hesitated before eating. “Is it poisoned? ”
Diana laughed and stroked his hair. “No, sweetie.
It’s fine. ”
She watched them eat with a mixture of relief and determination. This couldn’t happen again. She couldn’t rely on anonymous kindness.
She needed to go into town for a bit. She left Amy in charge of Oliver, with strict instructions to stay in the playground where she could see them from the street. Then she walked into the small convenience store, her heart hammering as she slipped a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter into her oversized purse. “Excuse me, miss.
”
The store owner’s voice stopped her cold. Gary, according to his vest, held out his hand. “I think you forgot something. Empty your bag, please, or I’ll have Lynn call Sheriff Mills.
”
Diana’s legs went weak. If she was arrested, what would happen to Amy and Oliver? Dominic would find them in the system within days. “There’s been a misunderstanding,” she attempted.
“No misunderstanding. I saw you plain as day. ”
Before she could say anything else, a deep voice cut through the tension. “I’ll pay for it.
”
The man from the playground stood beside her, his tall frame somehow between her and Gary without her noticing his approach. “Put it on my tab,” he said. “Whatever she has. ”
The room went silent.
Gary sighed, his tone softening. “Your tab’s getting mighty long this month. ”
“I’ll settle up on Friday. Promise.
”
Diana stood frozen as the man gently took her elbow and guided her toward the door. Outside, on the sidewalk, his amber eyes locked with hers. “Why? ” she managed.
His expression was unreadable. Eventually, he said, “Come on. It’s going to rain soon. ”
They walked down Main Street in silence until he introduced himself as Jackson.
Diana told him she wasn’t a thief, that her life was a retelling of Les Misérables. He didn’t laugh. He just nodded, like he understood all too well. “Thank you,” she said quietly, “for helping me back there.
And for the breakfast this morning. The kids were so happy. ”
Jackson blinked. “What breakfast?
”
“The food package on the bench this morning. ”
“That wasn’t me. ”
They stared at each other, mutual confusion written across their faces. Then they rounded the corner to the park and saw the children playing together on the swings.
Jackson’s daughter, Tara, was pushing Diana’s young son while Amy jumped excitedly beside them. “Dad,” Tara waved enthusiastically. “Look who I found. ”
Everything clicked into place.
“The breakfast,” Jackson murmured. “That was Tara. ”
“That was very kind of her,” Diana observed. “I told her not to get involved.
”
Diana noticed the way Jackson’s jaw tightened when she asked about Tara’s mother, and she understood. She placed a hand on his forearm. “My kids don’t have a father either. ”
Something passed between them then, plain and simple understanding.
Later, Jackson invited them to dinner. “I’m making spaghetti tonight. Nothing fancy, but there’s always too much. You and the kids should join us.
”
Diana felt the tension drain from her face as a smile broke across it. “Thank you. ”
That night, they gathered around Jackson’s table, and for the first time in months, Diana heard her children laugh freely. Jackson said little, but his eyes missed nothing, and twice he refilled her plate without asking, somehow sensing her reluctance to take more.
After dinner, as the children played outside, Diana helped clear the table. She watched Jackson watch the children through the window, tension evident in his shoulders. “I should tell you something important,” she said. His entire body tensed.
“Your spaghetti is terrible. ”
For a moment, he stared at her. Then a surprised laugh escaped him, a rich sound that transformed his face. “The worst,” she grinned.
Their laughter faded into comfortable silence. Then Diana confessed everything. She was running from someone dangerous, a man named Dominic Glover, a wealthy steel magnate who had manipulated her into a relationship, who threatened to take her children when she finally gathered the courage to leave. Jackson looked back at the children, then at Diana.
“Stay. I have a spare room. Just until you figure things out. ”
She flung her arms around him, feeling him stiffen in surprise before cautiously returning the embrace.
For the first time in months, Diana felt safe. Three weeks passed, and they fell into an easy rhythm. The children blossomed. Oliver’s nightmares faded.
Amy trusted Jackson with her homework. Tara embraced her role as protective big sister. Diana caught herself watching Jackson more often than she should, noting the way his amber eyes softened when he looked at the children. One morning, as she flipped pancakes, Jackson started to say something important.
“Diana, there’s something I need to tell you about Tara. About both of us. We’re not exactly… ”
The phone rang, cutting him off.
Diana watched the color drain from his face as he listened. “Is she okay? What about the other child? ”
He hung up slowly.
“It was the school. Tara bit somebody. ”
Diana blinked. “Bit someone?
Kids do that sometimes, Jackson. It’s not the end of the world. ”
But Jackson’s reaction suggested otherwise. He moved with sharp, desperate movements, reaching for his keys.
Something in his voice was raw, almost inhuman. “I have to get to the school now. ”
At the school, Diana learned the truth. Tara hadn’t actually bitten anyone.
Bobby, a boy from another class, had been taunting Amy and Oliver, calling them “poor white trash. ” Tara had defended them, threatening to bite him if he didn’t leave them alone. No actual contact had occurred. On the ride home, Jackson was quiet for a long time.
Then he said, “I think you should find somewhere else to stay. ”
Diana stared at him. “What? ”
“It’s not safe for you and your kids with us.
What happened today was a warning. ”
“A warning? Nothing happened, Jackson. It was a misunderstanding.
”
“I can’t risk there being a next time. ”
“No,” Diana said firmly. “Not unless you give me a real explanation. ”
“You don’t know what you’re asking.
”
“Then tell me. ”
The light turned green, but Jackson didn’t move. “Tonight. After the kids are asleep, I’ll tell you everything.
”
That night, Diana confronted him in the kitchen. She had shared everything with him, every ugly, shameful part of her story. She deserved the same courtesy. “I’m a wolf,” he said flatly.
Diana stared at him. “That’s not funny, Jackson. ”
“I’m not joking. I’m a wolf.
It’s why I was so terrified about Tara biting someone. Her saliva carries the shifters gene. It’s toxic to humans. One bite could kill.
”
“Stop it. If you want us gone, just say so. ”
“It’s the truth. Why would I make this up?
”
“Fine. Show me. ”
Jackson’s control slipped. “Fine.
Here’s your truth. ”
Before Diana could respond, the change took him. Bones cracked and reformed. Fur erupted through skin.
His face elongated into a muzzle filled with sharp teeth. Diana stumbled backward until she hit the refrigerator, her face drained of all color. “Oh my god! ”
He shifted back quickly, reaching for her.
“Diana, please let me explain. ”
“Stay away from me! Don’t touch me! ”
She ran to the children’s room, frantically shaking them awake.
“We have to go, baby, right now. ”
“But why? ” Amy protested. “It’s nighttime.
”
At the door, Diana paused, her face a mask of fear and betrayal. “Stay away from us,” she whispered. Then they were gone. Jackson sank to the floor, head in his hands.
He had destroyed the first chance at happiness he’d had in years. The next day, Tara found him in the garage. “Where’s Diana and Amy and Oliver? ”
“They had to leave, sweetheart.
”
“What did you do? ”
“Me? I didn’t do anything. ”
“You’re lying,” Tara said.
“This is about Bridget, isn’t it? ”
The name hit Jackson like a physical blow. But Tara’s voice was fierce. “She isn’t my mother.
I don’t need her, Daddy. I have you. I just don’t want you to be sad anymore. ”
The tears he had held back for seven years finally spilled over.
“You deserve more. You deserve a mother who loves you, a pack that accepts you. ”
“You’re enough, Daddy. You’ve always been enough.
”
Tara pulled back, her hands on her hips. “But Diana, she’s different. She didn’t reject us. She was just surprised.
You have to give her a chance. ”
“She ran just like… I showed her what I am. ”
“Amy and Oliver didn’t care when I told them,” Tara said triumphantly.
Jackson froze. “You told them what? ”
“About us. About what we are.
They thought it was cool. Oliver asked if I could teach him to howl. They didn’t run away, Daddy. They didn’t think I was broken.
”
Jackson stared at his daughter. “If the pack finds out we let humans know our secrets… ”
“What pack? We don’t have a pack, Daddy.
We’re our own pack. We make our own rules. ”
“When did you get so smart? ”
“I’ve always been smart.
The last bus leaves at 11:15. If we hurry, we might catch them. ”
It was 10:47. Jackson grabbed his keys, and they raced to the truck.
They screeched into the bus station parking lot at 11:02. Diana sat on a bench, Amy and Oliver huddled sleepily against her. Then a black sedan pulled up sharply beside them. Two men in dark suits leaped out.
Diana tried to gather the children, but she was too slow. The men grabbed Oliver, ignoring his frightened cries. Amy managed to bolt away, running straight for the truck. One of the men struck Diana as she fought to reach her son, sending her crumpling to the ground.
The men saw Jackson running for them and decided against confrontation. They shoved Oliver into the sedan and sped away. Back at the house, Diana pressed a cold washcloth to her throbbing cheek. “We need to call the police.
”
“No, we can’t do that,” Jackson said gently. “Men like Dominic have contingency plans. If the police get involved, he’ll disappear with Oliver. ”
“Then what do we do?
”
Tara spoke up from the couch. “We need help. The pack. ”
Jackson shook his head.
“They won’t help. They cast us out when Tara was born. ”
But Diana sat up straighter. “Did you say Garrett Holden?
”
“Yes. Why? ”
“Dominic has been controlling him. Controlling all of them.
” Diana began to pace. “When I worked for Dominic, I cleaned his private office. I heard him on phone calls, barking orders at someone he called Holden. He threatened to expose what their little community really is.
I saw documents, bank records, surveillance reports. Dominic owns them completely. ”
“Blackmail,” Jackson breathed. “And here’s the thing.
” Diana’s eyes held his. “I still have my security badge. Dominic never asked for it back. I know that building like the back of my hand.
If we destroy those files, Garrett and his people will be free. They’ll owe us. ”
Jackson understood. “And in exchange for their freedom, they help us get Oliver back.
”
“A pack of werewolves versus Dominic’s hired thugs. It wouldn’t even be a contest. ”
They had a plan. Diana called her old contact, John Mercer, the man who had helped her escape.
John agreed to get the documents for them, in exchange for protection from Dominic. They arranged to meet at the abandoned lumber mill outside town at midnight. Jackson arrived first with Diana. They waited in the foreman’s office, the cold seeping through cracked windows.
Jackson shrugged off his flannel shirt and offered it to her. “Werewolf metabolism,” he said. “I run hot. ”
A ghost of a smile touched her lips as she accepted it.
“Convenient. ”
They talked about the past. Jackson told her about Bridget, the alpha’s daughter, who had turned away from their newborn daughter with disgust written across her beautiful face. “I can’t sense her wolf,” Bridget had whispered.
“Jackson, she doesn’t have a wolf. What’s wrong with her? ”
When Jackson refused to give Tara away, Bridget ran to her father. Garrett gave him an ultimatum: the child goes, or they both do.
“They exiled you for protecting your daughter,” Diana said, outraged. “A wolf without a pack isn’t supposed to survive. Garrett thought I’d break within weeks and come crawling back without her. Instead, I learned what real strength was.
Not pack strength. Father strength. ”
“You know what the hardest part was? Learning to trust again.
Believing that someone could look at Tara and see her worth instead of her differences. ”
Diana turned to face him fully. “And now? Do you think you could trust?
”
“Now I’m terrified of losing the first people who’ve ever made us feel like family. ”
A flash of headlights swept across the wall. They jerked apart, instantly alert. It was John’s car.
Diana went out alone to meet him. He handed over a manila envelope and sped away into the night. When she returned, her face was flushed with triumph. “Got them.
Everything we need to free your pack from Dominic’s control. ”
“They’re not my pack anymore. ”
“They will be. Once they know you’re helping them, once they see what real loyalty looks like.
”
Looking at her, Jackson was struck by a sudden overwhelming realization. He loved her. The thought terrified him more than any threat they faced. They drove through the night, stopping only to call the Silver Creek Pack from a pay phone outside town.
A deal was struck. But when they turned onto Jackson’s street, a black sedan sat in the driveway. Dominic was inside, sitting in Jackson’s armchair like a king on a borrowed throne. Two men in dark suits flanked him.
On the couch sat Tara and Amy, huddled together, eyes wide with fear. “Where’s Oliver? ” Diana demanded. Dominic smiled, the expression never reaching his cold gray eyes.
“Safe for now. I only needed one hostage after all. ”
“What do you want? ”
“You, of course.
Did you really think I would let you go? That I would let you take my children? ”
“They’re my children. You never wanted them.
”
Dominic waved a dismissive hand. “My boy here told us everything, you know. Where you were staying. Who was helping you.
”
Tara caught Diana’s eye with a meaningful look. She hadn’t revealed their secret. “It’s over, Diana. Time to come home.
Amy stays with me tonight as insurance, but you’ll get both children back once you’re settled in the new house I’ve arranged. ”
“She’s not going anywhere with you,” Jackson said, his voice dangerously low. Dominic laughed. “And who’s going to stop me?
You? A disgraced mechanic. I own this town. I own the Silver Creek territory.
I own… ”
The windows rattled as howls pierced the night air. Not one, but many. The front door burst open.
Garrett Holden, alpha of the Silver Creek Pack, filled the doorway, flanked by others. “You owe nothing, Morris,” Garrett growled. “Not anymore. ”
Dominic rose, his face flushing.
“This doesn’t concern you, Holden. I have arrangements with your pack. ”
“Those arrangements are terminated. We’re no longer afraid of you or your threats.
”
Understanding dawned on Dominic’s face as he looked between Diana and the envelope still clutched in her hand. “You didn’t. ”
“We did,” Diana confirmed. “Every file, every piece of blackmail gone.
”
Dominic’s composure cracked, but calculation returned to his eyes. He straightened his jacket with a sharp tug. “This isn’t over. I’ll be seeing my children again, Diana.
Count on it. ”
The moment the sedan’s tail lights disappeared down the street, Diana rushed to Amy, gathering her into a fierce embrace. “Oliver? ” Diana asked, looking up at Garrett.
“Safe. At our compound. We intercepted them bringing him back here. ”
Diana sobbed with relief.
Jackson knelt beside them, one arm still around Tara, the other reaching for Diana’s hand. Golden afternoon light bathed the yard as Jackson sat on the porch steps. Beside him, Diana leaned against his shoulder, her fingers intertwined with his. Before them, three children chased each other across the lawn, their laughter carrying on the breeze.
“Penny for your thoughts? ” Diana asked. “Just thinking how different everything is. A month ago, I was so afraid of letting anyone close.
”
“And now you’re stuck with four of us. ”
“Wouldn’t have it any other way. ”
The sound of approaching vehicles drew their attention. Two trucks rolled up the driveway.
Garrett Holden stepped from the lead truck, followed by his beta and three other pack members. “Hayes,” Garrett acknowledged. “Your house looks well. We’ve come with an offer.
The council has reviewed your case. With Dominic’s threat neutralized and his criminal activities exposed, circumstances have changed. The Silver Creek Pack would welcome you back. You and your daughter would be reinstated.
”
Seven years ago, these words would have been everything Jackson wanted. “That’s a generous offer,” Jackson said carefully. Garrett nodded toward Diana and her children. “The woman and her pups would be allowed to live close by, of course, under your protection.
”
“Thank you, Alpha,” Jackson said, genuine respect in his voice. “But we’ll remain as we are. ”
Surprise flickered across Garrett’s face. “You choose to stay rogue even now?
”
“I choose this family. This home, this life we’re building. Silver Hollow has become our territory. These children, this woman, they’re my pack now.
”
Garrett studied them for a long moment, something like understanding passing over his features. “The offer remains open, should you ever change your mind. ”
“We appreciate that. And the pack will always have allies in Silver Hollow.
”
As the werewolves departed, Diana turned to Jackson, her blue eyes searching his face. “Are you sure? The pack would have given you back everything you lost. ”
Jackson shook his head, drawing her closer.
“Not everything. Some things you have to find on your own. ”
He cupped her cheek, his thumb tracing the curve of her lower lip. “Some bonds are stronger than pack tradition.
Bonds like choice. Every day I choose this. I choose you. ”
When he finally kissed her, it felt like completion rather than beginning.
Behind them, Tara’s exaggerated “Eww! ” followed by Amy and Oliver’s giggles broke the moment. Diana laughed against his lips before pulling back slightly. “I choose you, too.
Wolf and all. ”
As twilight settled over Silver Hollow, Jackson Hayes stood on his porch, surrounded by the family he never expected and the love he never thought possible. For the first time in years, he was exactly where he belonged.
