When you are the most famous and recognizable woman in the world, freedom can become the greatest luxury of all. For Princess Diana, even an ordinary evening among strangers could feel like an impossible dream. Yet there were moments when she chose to rebel in the most unexpected way: completely changing her appearance, slipping away from palace life, and experiencing the world as an anonymous woman.

According to Diana’s former royal butler, Paul Burrell, in his book A Royal Duty, the princess once asked him to purchase a straight, shoulder-length brunette wig and a pair of large, round glasses. When he returned to Kensington Palace, Burrell could hardly believe his eyes. The woman standing before him no longer resembled the princess followed by millions of cameras. She looked like an entirely different person.
Diana completed the transformation with a black puffer jacket and denim jeans before quietly heading to Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London. Incredibly, the plan worked.
Nobody recognized her.
The woman whose face had appeared on front pages around the world stood in line like everyone else. She even began chatting with a man beside her, who had no idea he was speaking to the Princess of Wales. The following day, Diana excitedly told Burrell that she had finally been able to be herself in a public place.
It was a simple sentence, but behind it lay years of loneliness.

This was not the only occasion when Diana used a disguise to enjoy a few precious hours of freedom. Actress Cleo Rocos later revealed that she once spent a night out with Diana and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. After drinking champagne and watching television together, the group decided to visit London’s Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
To prevent Diana from being recognized, they disguised her as an eccentrically dressed male model. With different clothes, hair, and mannerisms, she reportedly looked like a handsome young man. Once again, no one discovered her true identity.
Diana even walked to the bar and bought her own drinks. When the transaction was completed, the group exchanged triumphant glances like mischievous schoolchildren who had successfully pulled off a secret adventure. They laughed, celebrated, and enjoyed their small victory.
Yet beneath that laughter was a painful truth.
