A Florida judge denied a convicted killer’s emotional request to hug his family moments before beginning a life sentence, bringing a dramatic courtroom hearing to a close as the victim’s loved ones continued mourning the teenager whose life was taken.
The request came just before 18-year-old Christopher McCray was sentenced for the 2024 fatal shooting of 15-year-old Kayla Rincon-Miller. After hearing emotional statements from both families, the judge ordered McCray to spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional prison term for related convictions.
Judge Rejects Final Request
As deputies prepared to take McCray into custody, the teenager asked the court if he could embrace members of his family one final time before leaving the courtroom.
Circuit Judge Thomas Jaworski denied the request, citing courtroom security concerns.
Instead, the judge allowed McCray to speak briefly to his relatives from where he stood before deputies escorted him from the courtroom to begin serving his sentence.
Victim Was Killed in 2024 Shooting
The case stems from the fatal shooting of Kayla Rincon-Miller, a 15-year-old Florida high school student.
According to prosecutors, Kayla was killed during a confrontation in 2024. Investigators later arrested McCray, who was charged with first-degree murder and several additional offenses connected to the shooting.
Following a trial, a jury found him guilty on all major charges.
Emotional Statements Fill Courtroom
During the sentencing hearing, members of Kayla’s family described the lasting pain caused by her death.
Relatives spoke about birthdays, holidays, and milestones the teenager will never experience, telling the court that no sentence could replace the daughter, sister, and friend they lost.
Family members said they hoped the sentence would ensure accountability while allowing them to continue honoring Kayla’s memory.
Defendant Expresses Remorse
Before sentencing, McCray addressed the courtroom and apologized to Kayla’s family.
He acknowledged the pain caused by the shooting and expressed regret for his actions.
Despite the statement, prosecutors argued that the seriousness of the crime warranted the maximum punishment permitted under Florida law.
Life Sentence Without Parole
After hearing from both sides, Judge Jaworski sentenced McCray to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder conviction.
The court also imposed an additional 45-year prison sentence on related charges.
The judge said the evidence and circumstances of the case supported the lengthy punishment.
Family Says Justice Has Been Served
Although Kayla’s loved ones acknowledged that no court decision can undo their loss, they said the sentence brings a measure of justice after more than a year of legal proceedings.
For McCray, the hearing marked the beginning of a lifetime behind bars.
