The sheriff overseeing the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie says he is no longer personally communicating with her family as the high-profile case continues more than 100 days after she vanished.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos spoke about the status of the investigation and his communication with the family of the missing 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie during a recent interview.
“I personally am not,” Nanos said when asked whether he still communicates directly with the Guthrie family.
He explained that communication is now primarily handled through detectives and federal investigators involved in the case.
“If they need the family for anything, they get in touch with them and the family. It works both ways,” Nanos added, referring to his department and the FBI.
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1. Authorities believe she was abducted against her will during the early morning hours by a masked intruder.
Federal investigators later released surveillance footage showing an unidentified masked man allegedly tampering with Nancy’s doorbell camera shortly before her disappearance. Despite months of investigation, no suspect has publicly been identified.
Earlier in the investigation, Nanos revealed that he had been exchanging occasional texts and phone calls with Savannah Guthrie following her mother’s disappearance.
“We text or, every now and then, a phone call,” he previously said. “But no, I’ve not even sat down with her face-to-face. She’s got a lot on her plate.”
He added that FBI agents and detectives had maintained more direct communication with the family throughout the investigation.
Savannah has remained vocal online about the desperate search for her mother. The television host temporarily stepped away from Today earlier this year before returning to the program in April.
During one of her first interviews back, Savannah acknowledged the exhaustive work being done by investigators while also pleading for answers.
“Well, it’s still going and people have worked tirelessly, tirelessly,” she said. “And we see that. But we need answers. We cannot be at peace without knowing.”
The family has continued using social media to keep public attention focused on the case. On Mother’s Day, Savannah shared a deeply emotional tribute video featuring clips of Nancy throughout the years.
“Mother, daughter, sister, Nonie — we miss you with our every breath,” Savannah wrote. “We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you.”
Savannah and her family have also announced a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s recovery or the arrest of a suspect. The FBI separately offered an additional $100,000 reward connected to the investigation.
Authorities continue reviewing physical evidence, surveillance footage, and forensic material as the search for answers remains ongoing.
