I stayed late that evening because a new front desk clerk was still mixing up the weekly folios, and I wanted to make sure the books balanced before I left. I heard the phone ring from the back office, but I didn’t think much of it. Then Clay’s voice came through the line, low and careful, saying my name twice before he told me his mother was crying. I didn’t ask why.

I just told him to get in the truck, and he did.
