He gave a short laugh. “Most women would love to have a husband who provides like I do. ”
At the airport gate, Caleb suddenly asked me to stay with the kids while he spoke to his mother. The agent scanned one card, then another.

The supervisor didn’t answer immediately. “Because the card you’ve presented is not an ordinary credit card. ”
Lily still held Diane’s hand. “Then don’t speak to me as if I’m a stranger.
”
“Caleb told me you agreed to stay home. ”
“Sir, I think it may be exactly the place. This card has a security code that our system recognizes. ”
“What security code?
”
“Your card appears to have a higher access level than we first realized. ”
I noticed it immediately. “Ma’am, may I ask if you have traveled for your company recently? ” Then he asked the airline agent to check something on the computer.
He didn’t say anything. “Your name was removed from the original reservation yesterday. ”
“I am not the one who bought four tickets and brought three family members to the gate while leaving the fourth behind. ”
And I suddenly knew I couldn’t let them walk through that security line believing their mother had simply decided not to come.
“But are we still going to Hawaii? ”
“Whitmore, before you make any decisions, there’s something else you should know. ”
For the first time that morning, I felt something other than hurt. “You said Mom wanted to stay home.
But you’re not telling me something. ”
Because if someone tried to use your identity to access a protected account, they may have tried the same thing somewhere else. “I need you to check something. ”
I explained everything as simply as I could.
“Nora, I need you to stay calm. The documents you signed may not mean what Caleb told you they meant. And because your name is on the deed, they can’t simply remove you. ”
Then I found a name in the paperwork.
“How do you know his name? ” I could barely hear anything after she said the words, “Your husband. ”
Maybe not everything I knew, but enough. “Have you signed anything for him recently?
”
I had been making dinner while Lily was doing homework, and Caleb had asked me to sign two pages because he was running late. “Do not sign anything else until you know exactly what it is. ”
“You wouldn’t understand. ” I had accepted those words because I thought marriage meant trusting each other.
But it was enough. Instead, I looked at my children. “Are you two getting divorced? ” Nora, please don’t do anything stupid.
She needs to be the one to authorize any changes. Usually, Caleb always had something to say. After lunch, I went into our bedroom and closed the door. And at the bottom of both pages was my signature.
There was no other way to explain it. I had never agreed to become part of one. He was only 10. “I was going to tell you.
”
I saw the name before he could turn it over. It had only been the first place where Caleb’s secret stopped working. About $40,000. “About 20,000.
”
“You took $20,000 from our savings? ”
“We need to do something before she talks to anyone. ”
We both stopped. “Because you don’t understand what you’ll find.
” Then help me understand. I knew then that whatever he had done was bigger than $20,000. They all went to different companies. One name appeared three times.
I read the first paragraph, then the second. I read the sentence again because I couldn’t believe it. “You keep saying that, but you never tell me what you were fixing. ”
About 75,000.
“You said 40,000. ” I answered immediately. “Then tell me. ”
One was a copy of the authorization form.
And the third was a document I had never seen before. Below it were the names of two members, mine and Caleb’s. I was interested in making sure he could never do it again. When I asked Rachel, “What should I do?
” Then that may be very important. About 20 minutes from here. Rachel looked at the other attorney. If he kept copies of the documents there, we may find something useful.
The amount was $125,000. I didn’t understand. But if the house was moved into the company, it could have become part of the company’s assets. Almost $120,000.
Then he said the name. “A man named Victor Hale. ”
“Not at first. ” Most had different names, but they shared the same mailing address.
I found the original company agreement. Because he probably believed the company would make enough money to repay her. That still doesn’t explain the house. When that wasn’t enough, he tried to move our house into the company.
After a short conversation, she looked at me. They had been building a false version of me. A version that would appear to approve everything. The subject line contained only four words.
His message was short. But he added one sentence that made my hands go cold. Then Diane said something I never expected. “You still don’t understand what you found.
” There was a long silence. “Your name. ” At the bottom was a list of information about me. There was one final line beneath the list.
Diane had been planning this long before I knew there was a plan. Then I noticed a second name beneath mine. I stared at the name. Because I finally understood something Diane had never expected me to understand.
Caleb, if you were afraid of losing me, you should have talked to me. That sentence explained more than anything else. For a little while.
But love without honesty had not been enough.
