Oscar Piastri was once seen as the future of Formula 1, but now the young Australian is fighting for his career—and according to insiders, only one legendary figure can pull him back from the brink.
The McLaren driver hasn’t scored a grand prix win in over a year. His last victory came at Zandvoort in August 2024, and since then, the stats have been brutal. Team-mate Lando Norris has won four races in the same car, while Piastri has managed just five podiums in 22 race weekends.
The gap between them in the standings? A staggering 102 points.
So what went wrong? It’s not just the car. Norris has proven the machinery is capable of winning.
Some analysts suggest Piastri struggles with low-grip conditions, but the problem is showing up everywhere. Sources close to the paddock say the slump has lasted too long for McLaren to ignore.
A driver who gets consistently outperformed by his team-mate rarely keeps a top seat. Ask Valtteri Bottas or Daniel Ricciardo, who both lost their internal wars and ended up at smaller teams. Piastri reportedly faces the same fate.
Options at top teams look slim—Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull all have their own young talents lined up.
That leaves mid-field teams like Cadillac, Haas, Alpine, Williams, or Audi. But none of those offer a realistic path back to title contention. According to reports, Piastri’s only real hope is to bet on a rising team with a genius designer.
Enter Adrian Newey and Aston Martin. If Fernando Alonso retires after 2027, that seat could open up. Piastri would need to convince Newey he’s worth the gamble—just like Rubens Barrichello did when he joined a legendary designer’s project and helped win a constructors’ title.
