The jury in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial has hit a major roadblock, telling the judge they are deadlocked after 23 hours of deliberation. But the judge isn’t giving up yet, ordering them to keep working toward a verdict.
Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse from Duxbury, Massachusetts, is accused of strangling her three children—Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months—with exercise bands inside their home on January 24, 2023.
Her defense team is arguing she should be found not guilty by reason of insanity, claiming she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis at the time, worsened by a cocktail of powerful psychiatric medications. Prosecutors, however, allege the killings were carefully planned.
The jury, made up of nine women and three men, was sent home early Tuesday after telling Judge William Sullivan they were stuck. He thanked them for their commitment and told them to return Wednesday morning for a fifth day of talks.
Outside the courtroom, a bizarre twist unfolded when a woman named Dawn Light was arrested for allegedly photographing jurors. Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, brushed it off, saying, “It doesn’t affect us at all.”
Reddington also revealed that Clancy is struggling emotionally with the process, describing her as having a “flat affect” and being “sad.” When asked if she could handle a second trial, he simply said, “No.”
One supporter, Mary Stacey, 68, made a bold claim, saying this case is “bigger than OJ” Simpson’s trial, citing its international reach and focus on mental health. “It’s the subject matter—postpartum psychosis,” she said.
As the jury wrestles with their decision, the question remains: will they break the deadlock, or is this case headed for a retrial?
