The call came at a little past eight in the evening. Marie was working late again, or so she said. I didn’t recognize the number, but I picked up anyway. A woman’s voice asked if I was her husband.

When I confirmed, there was a long, awkward pause. I had to prompt her to speak. She said her name was Isabelle and that she needed to talk to me about Marie. I agreed to meet her, though I had no idea who she was.
The anxiety started chewing at me immediately, so I called her back and told her I could meet that night. We settled on a McDonald’s in the city center. I got there first and ordered something to eat. She arrived about five minutes later and introduced herself with her full name.
I recognized her last name immediately. It was the same as Marie’s boss. She was a much older woman, maybe thirty years my senior, but she looked like she took care of herself. I offered her some fries, and surprisingly, she took a few.
Then I asked her what was going on. . She told me her husband’s name was Spencer. Marie’s boss.
She asked where Marie was right then. I told her she was working late, that she had been working late a lot lately. She said her husband had been working late lately, too. I shrugged that off.
Then she dropped it: they were sleeping together. I shook my head. My mind refused to accept it. I told her that wasn’t possible, but she insisted it was.
She said Spencer had cheated before, and that last time he had promised it would be the absolute last time. Clearly, he had lied about that, too. I wanted to walk out, but there was no reason for her to make this up. So I asked what proof she had.
She said she had suspected he was back to his old ways, so she put a tracker on his car. I felt terrible for her in that moment. Imagine living with someone who made you feel so doubtful you had to track their movements. She said that instead of going to work as he claimed, he went to a restaurant and then to a hotel.
He still came home that night, but it didn’t sit right with her. So she got him drunk one night, and while he slept deeply, she went through his phone. She found conversations with escorts, but worse, she found his thread with Marie. They discussed work, but they also discussed meeting up to have sex.
That was what made it worse. She said she would have confronted him anyway, but since I was on the other end, she wanted to make sure I knew what was going on. I had my elbows on the table and my head buried in my hands. My life had been fine about an hour before then, and now this.
I told her she made the right call letting me know, but I told her I’d have to do my own checking to verify the truth. She said that wouldn’t be a problem and showed me screenshots of their conversations. If it was truly Marie he was talking to, then it was clear she was telling the truth. I recognized her texting style instantly.
I thanked her and headed home. . That night, when Marie came back, I tried to scrutinize her for any sign of what she had done. I couldn’t find one.
That alone showed me how carefully she had covered her tracks. When she fell asleep, I went straight to her phone. I found the exact same text thread Isabelle had shown me. It’s one thing to suspect your wife is cheating.
It’s another thing to have that idea flipped on your head when you had thought she was faithful. I still loved her, and my body was trying to find a way to explain it away, but I knew that wasn’t what I was supposed to do. I realized there wasn’t a suitable outcome apart from divorce. Even if I tried to keep going, it would only delay the inevitable.
I can’t be with a cheater. I refuse to do that. You might be sleeping beside her one night and suddenly start vividly imagining her with the guy she cheated with five years prior. I didn’t want to find myself in that spot.
I decided to confront her because I wanted to know her motivation. Spencer wasn’t what I’d call a handsome man. He was clearly much older than her, and I would have assumed he wasn’t her type. But the messages I saw didn’t look like someone who had been coerced.
There was a power imbalance, sure, but she wasn’t a passive participant in their dirty talk. She was leaning into it. I decided I would confront her, and if she claimed she had been coerced, then I’d think about it then. But even if that were true, there was no reason she wouldn’t have told me so we could figure it out together.
She didn’t even have the guts to come clean herself. I had to find out from the man’s wife at a dang McDonald’s, no less. . The next night, she said she had to work late again.
I told her we needed to talk when she got back. She tried to get me to say what it was over the phone, but I told her I wasn’t going to compromise on that. She came home at her usual time and immediately asked what I wanted to talk about. I asked her where she was coming from.
She said the office. I told her to tell me the truth. She changed it to a business dinner and then the office. I told her I didn’t believe her.
She insisted that was where she had been and seemed confused I thought otherwise. I realized this might be one of the few nights she was actually where she claimed. So I changed tactics and asked her if that was where she had been on the other nights she claimed to be working late. She paused before replying.
Then she said, “Pretty much. ” It was clear she knew I knew something, but she had no idea what. I told her I knew she was with Spencer on those nights, that she wasn’t always busy with work. She snapped: “What are you spying on me?
How would you know that? ” I told her it didn’t matter how I found out. I told her we could talk about that later, but I wanted to know if what I said was true. She tried to deny it, but I cut her off.
I told her she had no idea how I knew the truth, so it would be a big mistake not to tell the truth. She sighed. Then she told me she had been with Spencer outside the office on some days. She phrased it like they hadn’t been sleeping together, which annoyed me.
I asked what they’d been up to on those days. She refused to say anything, so I filled the gap. I told her they had been having sex and that I had receipts to prove it. She asked me to show her.
I wasn’t going to hand her my phone. So I started reading her conversations out loud. I watched her face go pale as she realized I was actually reading them. Then she turned it into: “You’ve been going through my phone?
” I just said no and kept reading. Then she said she got the point. She was starting to have an attitude, despite the fact I had just caught her. That annoyed me even more.
I asked her why she did it. She said she didn’t have a choice. He had suggested it one too many times, and we were too career focused as a family for her to risk getting fired. She said she knew I would react like this if she had told me.
So she did what needed to be done. I told her that while it was true she might have felt she had little choice, her reaction showed me she was the kind of person who would fight to hide an affair instead of feeling relieved I had found out so we could figure things out together. She had been defensive. Plus, some of the messages didn’t look like someone who had been coerced.
Then I let her know someone else had clued me in, and I had only checked her phone after I was given enough to believe she was cheating. I told her not to attempt any gaslighting or reversing, which she had been trying to do. She had an attitude ever since I confronted her. How do you try to act nasty when you were the one caught cheating?
Her attempts to dodge accountability were insane. I ended up walking out of the room and locked myself in the bedroom. The next day, I went to a divorce lawyer before work. She worked at a law firm, so I knew I needed a really good one, especially if she tried to get her firm to back her up.
When the divorce papers were ready, I had her served at work. When she came home that night, she didn’t even speak to me. At one point, I told her she was going to have to leave the house. She told me she wasn’t going to do that.
She said she had a legal right to the house and that if I was uncomfortable staying under the same roof, I could leave instead. I refused to leave. So we were stuck waiting to see who the judge would award the house to. I spoke to Isabelle again.
I thanked her for letting me in on what was going on and told her I was going to divorce my wife. She told me I was making the right move and that she was going to do the exact same thing. She said she was tired of giving him chances and letting herself get heartbroken after each time. She had stuck through previous affairs because she didn’t want their children to deal with divorced parents, but they were all old enough now and she was prioritizing her own happiness.
I respected that deeply. I promised to update everyone once the divorce played out. . Now I’m a freshly divorced man.
My head feels muddled. It is hard to go from being married to being on your own, but there’s nothing I can do about it. I just need to learn to adapt. First, I learned Isabelle successfully divorced her husband and came out on top.
She got to keep the house as well as a pretty hefty alimony. I’m happy for her. She was the faithful one in that relationship. She deserved to come out on top.
As for me, I didn’t get off too badly. I somehow got to keep the house in the divorce. I really thought the judge would award it to her, but thankfully that wasn’t the case. Everything else went as expected.
I have to pay relatively sensible alimony since I earned a lot more as a researcher than she did as a paralegal. We split our savings as a couple. Both people involved in the affair ended up losing their marriages. Though I’m not sure Marie was as heartbroken about it as her boss seemed to be.
Maybe she was just really good at not letting me see. The crazy thing is Isabelle reported both of them to their workplace before I could. I had planned to, but that woman is smart, and it seems she was really out for blood this time. There was an investigation, and both her husband and Marie were let go.
When I spoke to Isabelle, I told her I found it interesting she was let go considering the power imbalance. She told me she let some of her friends in the company know her husband had worked there long enough, that Isabelle could be a risk to other high-ranking employees in the firm. So there wasn’t a point in keeping her around. I was thankful for that because I had a strong feeling a complaint from me alone might not have yielded the same results.
The best part is Marie can’t blame me for ruining her life. She can blame her affair partner’s wife instead. I felt like I was a passive player in this whole thing, but as much as I didn’t mind it, I decided to get a little bit of my own revenge. I let her whole family know exactly why we had gotten divorced.
I was sure she hadn’t told them the real story. So I told them and sent them screenshots, so they’d know it was entirely her fault. I only reacted to her initial action. Her brothers were pissed off at her since we had all become really good friends.
Her dad was disappointed. Her mom was too, but it was clear she was trying to take her daughter’s side, which annoyed me. I guess I can see where Marie got it from. Marie reached out and tried to cause a whole issue after I told her parents, but I told her I was merely setting the record straight.
When she tried cursing me out over the phone, I just hung up on her. I’m done with her. I have to pay alimony, so that’s the only thing that will keep me linked to her. The moment that is done, I’ll be happy to be done with her completely.
I just want to focus on my life without worrying about a cheating woman. And in due time, I know I’ll be able to. [Music] Marie is straight up toxic on a level hard to put into words. Her “I had no choice” excuse?
Please. She made the choice every single time she got with Spencer. She tried to play this off like she was some victim of circumstance, but you know the truth. She is manipulative, cowardly, and fully aware of the destruction she caused.
And honestly, telling her family the truth was a genius move. She spent years hiding her real self, and now everyone sees her exactly as she is. A liar who thought she could cheat her way through life and come out unscathed. That’s all on her.
You didn’t ruin her life. She did that herself. Share your thoughts in the comments below. Thank you for joining us today on RSpace.
