The camera was hidden in the corner, right in our own sitting room, when I watched my wife climb on top of him in our bed, in our house, while I was supposed to be on a work trip. I saw...

I was home by lunchtime, and the house was empty. Seven towels sat in the clothes bin. The bed sheets were still on the bed, unwashed. I could see exactly what had happened in that room, and every detail of it was burned into my mind.

I’d spent Tuesday night watching them through my own hidden camera. The voice-activated recorder by the fireplace had captured everything, every sound, every word. He’d arrived Monday night, stayed Tuesday night, and left Wednesday morning. My wife had gone at it again with him in the early hours, right in our bed.

I wasn’t just suspicious anymore. I knew. And I had evidence

I packed two suitcases and put them by the sitting room door. One for me, one for her.

I took her box of sex toys out of the bedroom and set it aside. Then I spent the afternoon writing out my list of questions. I practiced my breathing, the slow kind that keeps you angry but controlled. I charged the recorder and put it back by the fireplace, and I hid the camera in a corner of the room.

When she walked in just after six thirty, she saw the suitcases right away. “Are you going somewhere? ” she asked. “That depends on you,” I said.

“Sit down. We have to talk. ”

I told her I knew about the affair. She denied it.

I told her not to BS me. She tried to gaslight me, told me I was being crazy and that I had trust issues. I left the room and came back with the box. I threw it on the floor and the toys scattered everywhere.

She claimed they were hers, that she was too embarrassed to tell me she needed them. I told her she needed to change tactics, because her lies weren’t going to work this time. She started crying. And I felt nothing.

Three weeks ago, her tears would have wrecked me. Now she just looked like someone wearing my wife’s face. I asked if she wanted a divorce. She said no, that he was just a side project, that I was the one she loved, and she asked what she could do to make it up to me.

I told her the lies had to stop. I was going to ask her questions. I already knew most of the answers, but not all. If she lied to me three times, I was walking out with that suitcase and she would never see me again.

The only way I stayed was full disclosure. She nodded, still sobbing. I asked if she was having sex with him. She admitted it.

I asked if they’d had sex in our house, in our bed. She claimed they hadn’t, that they always got a hotel. I said, “That’s your first lie. I know you met him here.

I know you f–ked him in my bed. Two more and we’re done. ”

I asked when the last time was. That morning, she said.

I asked if they’d done it the night before too. Yes. I asked how often she met him. Once a month, while I was away, unless she was on her period.

I asked if they ever met for lunch or anything casual. No. When did it start? She told me she’d known him before we ever met.

He was a college crush, and when he showed up at one of my work Christmas parties years ago, they’d hit it off. He found her on LinkedIn not long after, and they started messaging. That was seven years ago. Seven years

I asked why she was hiding the toys.

She said she used them when I wasn’t around. I told her that was her second lie, and if she lied again, I was done. I wasn’t going to respond. I was just going to leave and get on the next flight.

I told her I knew her affair partner liked to be penetrated with the toys, and that she did that to him. She asked how I could possibly know that. I lied. I told her I was talking to his wife.

The look on her face was priceless. She went pale. For an Irish woman, that’s saying something. I told her I meant it.

One more lie, and I was on a one-way flight to Australia. She started begging again, saying she’d do anything. I told her to answer my questions. I asked if she performed oral on him.

She admitted it. I asked if they used protection. She said no. I asked if she loved him.

She said she felt something, but she wouldn’t call it love. I asked if she’d end it. She said yes. I asked if she enjoyed sex more with him.

She said it was different, but not better. I asked again if they used protection. She hesitated for ages. I asked again.

I told her if she didn’t answer, I was walking out forever. Finally, she admitted they didn’t. I asked if she let him finish inside her. She admitted she did.

I asked if she’d ever aborted a pregnancy. She was horrified, but answered no

I handed her the separation agreement. I told her if she didn’t sign, I’d file in Australia. If she did sign, she had fourteen days to move out.

Either way, I wasn’t spending those days under the same roof. She refused. She begged me to stay. Then her phone rang.

It was him. His wife had just thrown him out. He was yelling down the phone, and she kept saying she didn’t know. I told her to answer it.

I wanted to hear it. While she was distracted, I walked out the door. That was the last time I saw her030. I blocked her everywhere.

My employers let me work from Australia for a while. I’m kind of excited about it. I left Ireland in my early twenties. I’ve spent half my life here.

A new start, closer to family, that’s something to hold onto

Over the next few days, I ignored every attempt she made to reach me. She tried calling from unknown numbers. I hung up once I knew it was her. She left voicemails, begging, crying, telling me she loved me, that it was just physical, that it meant nothing.

In one she was angry, called me a coward. Then she called back to apologize for saying it. I didn’t respond to any of it. I was done

On Sunday morning, I finally checked the voice-activated recorder and listened to what happened after I drove away.

She called out my name, opened the front door. I knew she tried calling me then, so she must have hung up on him without warning. Then she called someone else, probably her mother or brother. She told them I’d left her.

They asked why. She said she didn’t want to get into it, but she was worried I wasn’t coming back. I didn’t hear a single truthful account of events from her

About half an hour later, he showed up at the house. She didn’t open the door.

She shouted through the glass that he couldn’t be there, that he’d done enough damage, that if he didn’t leave she’d call the guards. He left. I didn’t hear from her again through the recorder that night, which meant she didn’t stay in the sitting room. I didn’t care where she went

Later that morning, I got the call I’d been waiting for.

The affair partner’s wife. She thanked me for sending her the PI evidence, for making her aware of the affair. I asked what she knew. She repeated the lies he’d told her.

That they only met recently. That it was a one-time thing. That he’d never see her again. He must have said that minutes before showing up at my house.

I told her there was much more, and I didn’t want to discuss it over the phone. She was at her parents’ place in Wicklow. I offered to drive out. It was about ninety minutes of green, forestry, fresh air.

I needed it

When I got there, her parents welcomed me back. I felt a wave of guilt meeting her young son. Then we got down to business. I told her every word her husband had told her was a lie.

I pulled out my wife’s old phone and let her read the messages. They went back three years. She was shocked. She said he was never that crass with her.

Then I played her the recording of my wife admitting to the seven-year affair. That hit her hard. I told her I had explicit video of two sexual encounters. She said she didn’t want to see it, but asked me to describe it at a high level.

I told her it was mostly what you’d expect, except the part where my wife pulled out a box of toys and used one on him. She looked like she was going to be sick. Then I played her the recording of her husband arriving at my house minutes after telling her he was done with her. I told her I was sorry I couldn’t leave the evidence with her, but I’d let her know if anything else turned up on the recorder

Afterwards, I drove to my in-laws’.

I wasn’t ready to see my wife, but I had to head off any missing person’s report. Her car wasn’t there, so I went in. They offered me coffee. I asked if they’d been talking to my wife.

They had. I asked if they knew I was separating from her. They nodded. I asked if she’d told them why.

She hadn’t. I told them I caught her with another man while I was away for work. I showed them the PI photos and timeline. Her father apologized.

Her mom asked how long. I told her seven years. I told them we were getting a divorce, that there was no coming back from this, that by refusing to leave the house, she was costing us both money, because I was staying in a hotel on joint funds. I said there was no universe where I’d live under the same roof as her again, and that it was in her best interest to move out until we sold the place.

They agreed and said they’d talk to her

That evening, I got an email from her. She said she’d be willing to sign the separation agreement and move back to her parents’, but she wanted us to meet and talk first. I didn’t respond. At midnight, I called my parents in Australia and told them what was happening.

I hadn’t been back since before COVID. They were upset. I didn’t tell them I was thinking of returning home, just in case those plans changed

Her sudden willingness to sign made it clear she knew she’d lost all leverage. Whether she genuinely wanted to talk or just make one last attempt at damage control, I wasn’t interested.

The paperwork could do the talking

A few days later, she emailed again, insisting we talk before she signed. I replied with two words: “Not happening. ”

Twenty-four hours later, I got a fifteen-thousand-word email from her, with an attachment. The attachment was the signed separation agreement.

No alterations. She agreed to everything. The house would be empty by five p. m.

on Thursday. I could move back in when I wanted

I decided I didn’t want to stay in Ireland anyway. I’d been thinking about it for a while. I got flights to Australia in July.

My company offered me a transfer to Sydney. It’s a short flight from there to visit my family whenever I wanted. My parents were delighted. I’d sell the house.

With Ireland’s housing crisis, that wouldn’t be difficult

Meanwhile, the affair partner wouldn’t stop hanging around. He showed up at my house the Sunday I was visiting his wife. She let him in this time. He was living with his parents in Kilkenny now, a long commute to Dublin.

He begged my wife to take him back. He cried. She told him she wasn’t interested, that he needed to forget about her, that she loved her husband and intended to do everything she could to win me back. She told him their relationship was a huge mistake, that their monthly fling was just a bit of fun, that it hadn’t been worth it, that it never should have happened.

He left, still crying. I contacted his wife and told her he was still pestering my wife. We had lunch today, talked for over two hours, shared a bottle of wine. She’d seen a solicitor and started her own separation.

She couldn’t take the same hard line as me, though, because of their son. He hadn’t even attempted to see the kid. It made everything so much worse

My wife still hadn’t told our mutual friends what really happened. One contacted me, saying how devastated she was, asking if there was any chance of reconciliation.

I told her about the affair. I told her there was no way on earth this ended any way other than divorce. She said she’d spread the word to the others, so I wouldn’t have to keep taking those calls. I told her I had a ridiculous amount of evidence if anyone needed to see it, but I doubted my wife would deny it

The voice-activated recorder didn’t pick up much else.

A few sobbing sessions. One side of a few phone calls. Nothing more. Now I’m planning to soak up the local culture for the next few months before I head home.

The Dublin St. Patrick’s Day parade on Monday. Maybe a Guinness or two. Then a new life in Australia, closer to family, away from all of this.

I’m ready for it
