I was on the phone with my husband, distracted and packing up to leave the office on a Friday afternoon. He was heading to the airport for our annual weekend with friends, and my head was everywhere but where it should have been. I grabbed my mother-in-law’s laptop instead of mine and didn’t realize it until I was home and wanted to check some fixtures for a project in her house. I texted her to let her know I had the wrong computer.

She replied, “No worries,” and told me to do whatever I needed on it since she was unplugging for the weekend anyway. I was just browsing, trying to find the right lighting for her kitchen, when I accidentally clicked a linked email on a store’s contact page. My MacBook popped up a draft in her mail app. I closed it.

And that’s when I saw an email sitting in her inbox from a recently hired apprentice. The subject line read: Our Weekend Getaway Itinerary. I froze. I knew I shouldn’t be reading her personal email, but I couldn’t stop myself.

What I found was explicit. Romantic messages between that 22-year-old male apprentice and my 47-year-old mother-in-law. My boss. The woman I’d known and loved for years like the mother I never had.

I slammed the laptop shut and went straight to bed. I lay there staring at the ceiling, my mind spinning. My husband was gone all weekend. I sat with this secret, alone, panicking about what to do.

When I went back to the office, I had to see her the next day and could barely keep my composure. I locked myself in my office and avoided her as much as I could. When my husband finally got home, he knew something was wrong. He reads me like a book.

I told him I’d found something I shouldn’t have, and then I told him everything. He was mortified. But he said he was glad I told him. Keeping it from him would have been worse.

He knew more about that apprentice than I did. It was the son of a family friend. She’d known him since he was a teenager, and hiring him was a favor to that friend. My husband took it from there.

The computer was company property, and he had rights to it. He could log in remotely. He took screenshots of emails between her and the apprentice going back over a year before he even worked there. Then he found messages with someone else, two years old.

Then evidence of a second phone and hotel reservations. He took everything to his dad. I never found out exactly how that conversation went. But I know they went to get tested.

My father-in-law tested positive. He came to our house for dinner instead of going home, and we talked for hours. He looked heartbroken, like a teenager. He said he’d had suspicions years ago that she was talking to other men, but there was never any proof.

The fight fizzled out, and they moved on. Now, with undeniable proof of multiple affairs, he said it was over. He had an airtight prenup. In the case of infidelity, she forfeited all ownership of the business and the house they built together.

So, coming clean didn’t destroy my marriage or my career. I told my husband because we don’t keep secrets from each other. It’s the foundation of what we share. A month later, my father-in-law confronted her.

He brought the proof my husband found, his positive STI results, a copy of the prenup, and the divorce papers. He stayed calm, laid it all out on the table, and told her what the next steps would look like. She knew she was caught. She asked how he found out.

He said it didn’t matter. He was willing to make concessions, even after everything she’d done. He offered her spousal support and the vacation home, neither of which was in the prenup, if she would come clean about everything and step down quietly. She fought for a little while, then relented.

The divorce should go smoothly. She stepped down from the business and moved into the vacation home. My father-in-law has been spending a lot of time with us since then, going golfing and hiking with my husband. He’s heartbroken, and he worries it’s going too smoothly.

He’s waiting for her to suddenly change her attitude and turn cruel. But I think she just knows she messed up past any fixing it. I’m still struggling to make sense of the woman I loved as a mother figure and worked beside for years versus the woman who did all of this. But there’s nothing I can do except be there for my father-in-law and my husband.

They’re leaning on each other now, and it’s honestly heartwarming to see that bond get stronger through all of this. She reached out to me to apologize for putting me in the position, hoping we could still have some kind of relationship. So she found out he found out from me. I told her not right now.

I don’t know what the future holds. But my husband is my number one priority. His dad is handling things, and I know he’ll figure out the rest.

Right now, we’re all just dealing with the fallout of what’s been revealed.
