The first time the world really saw Jake Haro was in 2018, when he and his then-wife Vanessa were charged with child cruelty involving their ten-week-old daughter. That baby suffered a skull fracture, a brain hemorrhage, broken ribs, and a healing fracture in her leg. Jake claimed he dropped her while washing her in the sink. The medical report told a different story entirely.
The injuries were signs of long-term abuse and neglect, and the damage was permanent. That little girl survived, but she was left with cerebral palsy and a lifetime of disability. By June of 2023, Jake had taken a plea deal on one count of willful child neglect. The prosecution asked for prison.
The judge decided Jake “deserved an extra break. ” A six-year sentence was suspended, and he was ordered to complete six months in a work release program followed by four years of probation. The District Attorney at the time called the decision outrageous. Jake himself claimed he was the real victim, insisting he was railroaded and that the judge knew he didn’t do it.
In July of 2024, while still on probation, Jake was arrested again for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. He posted a ten-thousand-dollar bail and walked out in August. Months later, he had a new wife, Rebecca, and a new baby boy named Emanuel. On August 14th, 2025, Rebecca reported that she had driven with Jake and four of their children to an athletic field in Yucaipa for a football scrimmage.
Before the game, she stopped at a Big 5 Sporting Goods store to buy her stepson a mouthguard. After making the purchase, she returned to the vehicle and parked in the shared lot of a shuttered Big Lots and Big 5. She said she needed to change baby Emanuel’s diaper, so she placed him on the back seat of the passenger side of the vehicle. According to Rebecca, a man approached her, greeted her with “Hola,” and knocked her unconscious.
When she came to, she claimed the baby was gone. She ran into the store screaming, searching for her son. Nobody saw a struggle. Nobody saw a suspect.
No vehicle was spotted speeding away. A helicopter and K9 units searched the area for hours. Nothing was found. But here’s what bothered people: an Amber Alert was never issued.
The Sheriff’s Department said the case didn’t meet the criteria—no confirmed suspect, no verified vehicle description, no evidence of a stranger abduction. Rebecca and Jake went on the news, handing out flyers, begging for help. Rebecca appeared with a bruised eye, gasping and pleading, “I’m begging you. If you know anything, please, I’m begging you to bring him back.
” She described Emanuel as twenty-one pounds, twenty-four inches tall, with brown hair and crossed eyes, last seen in a black Nike onesie. Some viewers found her performance unconvincing. They described her tears as crocodile tears. Still, strangers across the community rallied.
The Uvalde Foundation for Kids offered a five-thousand-dollar reward for information about Emanuel’s disappearance. But investigators soon realized the truth. There was no security footage of the area. The white Toyota 4Runner she described was never seen.
No witnesses came forward about the mysterious “Hola” man. When detectives pressed Rebecca about the inconsistencies in her story, she became defensive and then refused to cooperate entirely. On August 22nd, Jake and Rebecca were arrested at their home in Cabazon on suspicion of murder. The Sheriff’s Department announced that the kidnapping never happened, that baby Emanuel was believed to be dead, and that the search to recover his remains was ongoing.
Two days later, deputies were alerted to a field in Moreno Valley. They brought Jake along. Footage showed him standing almost motionless in an orange jail jumpsuit while investigators searched around him. Around forty to fifty deputies and cadaver dogs combed the area for hours.
Nothing was found. There were unconfirmed reports that Jake allegedly confessed during a jailhouse informant operation. He was said to have admitted rolling over baby Emanuel while sleeping, accidentally suffocating him. In a panic, he hid the body in a trash bin and later buried it somewhere so he could visit the grave.
He never revealed the location. The District Attorney later said the filing reflected a belief that Emanuel was a victim of child abuse over time and that he eventually succumbed to those injuries. When asked directly about the alleged jailhouse confession, the DA denied it existed. But reporter Brian Entin stood by his reporting, insisting he had checked and rechecked his sources.
Both parents stayed unnervingly committed to the story. From the detention center, Rebecca insisted, “I will not give up on my baby. ” She defended Jake, saying, “He’s a good dad. He’d never hurt a baby.
” Jake, in turn, defended her: “Rebecca is innocent. The media is killing her. She’s a beautiful woman. She loves her children.
”
When asked what he would say to Emanuel if the baby were ever found, Jake replied, “I love you, buddy. ”
The couple’s two-year-old daughter was taken into protective custody. Their home was taped off. Neighbors said they barely knew them.
At the initial court hearing, both were charged with murder and filing a false police report. They entered not guilty pleas. But on October 16th, Jake broke down in the courtroom and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, child assault causing death, and filing a false report. He entered the plea directly to the court, with no deal from the District Attorney.
Rebecca’s mother, Mary, was present at the sentencing. She demanded that Jake look her in the eyes as she spoke. She described how Jake had destroyed her entire family. She had never even met baby Emanuel.
She didn’t know Rebecca was pregnant. She only met her two-year-old granddaughter after she had a stroke in March and her son brought her. “He branded those children for life,” Mary said. “He destroyed my whole family.
Every time I go to the store, somebody recognizes me, they attack me. This has been horrible for us. ”
She said the judge who gave Jake an extra break in 2018 should have been in that courtroom. She said the entire system had failed her family.
The District Attorney echoed that thought: “If that judge had done his job as he should have done, Emmanuel would be alive today. ”
Jake was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. For the child abuse that destroyed the life of the ten-week-old baby in 2018, the court imposed an additional six-year term. For the firearm possession, he received another eight months.
For the false police report, an additional 180 days. All sentences were ordered to run consecutively. A ten-thousand-dollar restitution fine was imposed, though Jake was credited with 551 days of time served. Rebecca continues to plead not guilty.
Her next court hearing is scheduled for January 21st, 2026. As of the most recent updates, baby Emanuel’s remains have still not been found. His older sister, the baby from the 2018 case, is now seven years old. She is permanently bedridden with cerebral palsy, the result of long-term child abuse at her father’s hands.
The Haros’ abandoned home in Cabazon has been transformed into a memorial. Strangers have covered the walls with stuffed animals, toys, and handwritten notes. A candlelit vigil was held in honor of the little boy. People who had never met Emanuel wept for him.
One woman said, “I had two miscarriages. When I had those, it broke my heart. To see that somebody was able to hurt this little boy, it’s not okay. ”
In honor of baby Emanuel, the Uvalde Foundation renamed its No Child Lost Initiative to Emmanuel’s Hope, determined to honor his memory by strengthening the search for lost children everywhere.
The people who should have protected Emanuel at all costs were the ones who ultimately destroyed him. Complete strangers were the ones who stood up for him in the end.
