Is Cadillac F1 already having second thoughts about its veteran lineup? The team’s top boss just made a surprising admission that has fans buzzing about a potential youth movement before 2027.
Cadillac F1 CEO Dan Towriss has flatly denied swirling rumors that the American team is planning a mid-season driver swap. Reports have linked the squad with rising star Rafael Camara, the reigning F3 champion currently making waves in Formula 2, as a possible replacement for one of its seasoned drivers.
The team kicked off their debut campaign with 36-year-olds Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas behind the wheel. They also poached IndyCar standout Colton Herta as their test and reserve driver, aiming to groom him for an F1 seat while he builds experience in F2. But Herta’s tough season in the feeder series—sitting 16th in the standings—has reportedly shifted the team’s focus.
Towriss faced the press this week after announcing Marcin Budkowski as the new team principal, replacing Graeme Lowdon. When asked if Camara could swoop in for a veteran like Perez or Bottas, the CEO kept his cards close to his chest.
“It’s a great question,” Towriss said, “whether a younger driver can come in and push the team. It’s certainly something that we think about. We’ve got two experienced drivers that we’re very happy with, that are pushing the team, and we’ll continue to push them.”
He added: “I know there’s been some of the rumours out there with some of the young drivers. They’re not substantiated, so that’s not something I would focus on. We’re not focused on that at the moment.”
But then came the caveat that really got fans talking. “I’ll throw the caveat, though. It’s Formula 1, and things can always change.
There are no changes planned at the moment for ’27, but things can always change.”
Perez has been outperforming Bottas so far, making the Finn the likelier candidate for a swap. Yet Perez himself is tangled in whispers about a possible move to Williams in 2027, adding another layer of 𝒹𝓇𝒶𝓂𝒶 to Cadillac’s driver lineup.
