A Massachusetts State Police forensic scientist delivered jarring testimony Thursday in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, describing a master bedroom and basement drenched in blood stain patterns that paint a chilling picture of the Duxbury mother’s alleged attack on her three young children.
The analyst, a supervisory forensic scientist with the state police crime scene response unit, walked jurors through a meticulous examination of the Clancy family home on Summer Street, detailing saturated carpet stains, drip patterns, smears, and transfer marks that covered multiple surfaces in the home where prosecutors say Clancy strangled and bludgeoned her children in January 2023.
The testimony focused on red-brown stains found throughout the residence, with the expert carefully distinguishing between patterns that indicated stationary bleeding, movement through blood, and contact transfers of bloody objects onto clean surfaces.
“The center stain is darker red, that is the saturation stain, and then surrounding it there is lighter red-brown staining that was a transfer from that saturation stain across the carpet,” the analyst testified, describing a stain pattern found on the basement carpet.
The witness explained that while the saturation stain showed where blood had soaked directly into the fibers, the surrounding transfer pattern indicated that something had touched the wet stain and then moved across the carpet, dragging blood to the side.
In the master bedroom, the analyst identified a complex array of stains on the floor between the mirror and the bed, including circular drip stains consistent with blood falling straight down under gravity from a standing, stationary source.
“Those are drip stains,” the analyst testified. “Blood coming from a blood-letting event and going to the ground just due to gravity.”
The expert also noted overlapping stains that formed a drip pattern, indicating the blood source remained stationary for a period of time as blood continued to fall into existing pools.
Smear stains were also identified in the same area, showing that someone or something had moved through the wet blood, creating lateral drag marks across the floor.
The mirror in the master bedroom yielded elliptical blood stains that the analyst said could not be definitively classified, leaving two possible explanations for how they were created.
“They could be a drip stain that just landed at an angle, or actually a spatter stain, which is blood in flight,” the analyst testified, explaining that a force could have propelled blood onto the mirror or that blood could have dripped onto it during movement.
A transfer stain was found on the bedroom window sill, with the analyst explaining that a bloody object had come into contact with the surface, leaving behind an irregular red-brown mark that provided limited information.
The nightstand produced significant evidence, including a linear transfer stain that matched the shape and size of a knife’s edge, indicating the weapon had been placed there while still wet with blood.
“I identified the linear blood stain up at the top, which is to the right of the knife,” the analyst testified. “The bloody edge of the knife came in contact with the nightstand and left that stain there.”
The expert noted that the knife had since been moved from that position, though it was impossible to determine whether someone had knocked it or intentionally pushed it over.
“That is a location that that knife was at for a period of time for that blood to transfer onto the table,” the analyst explained.
The testimony also covered a red-brown stain found in the snow below the bedroom windows, which the analyst said was too diluted and irregular to provide meaningful information about how it was formed.
“It’s a diluted red-brown stain,” the analyst said. “It’s irregular in shape, so I just classified it as a red-brown stain.”
Additional drip stains were documented at the entrance to the master bedroom, with circular patterns indicating blood falling directly to the floor at a 90-degree angle from a bleeding source above.
The analyst also detailed stains on the side of the bed that formed another drip pattern, emphasizing that such patterns require a stationary blood source over a period of time.
“For a drip pattern to be formed, there has to be a stationary blood source,” the analyst testified. “You would have to stand there for a while and allow the blood to drip out into each other.”
However, the analyst acknowledged that the photographs could not reveal the amount of time required for the blood to accumulate, as that would depend on the nature and severity of the wound.
Evidence from the exterior of the home proved equally striking, with red-brown transfer stains found on the shingles between the second-floor and first-floor windows, directly beneath an open window from the master bedroom.
“Those two areas, which were to the left and the right below the window, were identified as transfer stains,” the analyst testified. “A bloody object coming in contact with a surface leaving the blood stain there.”
The expert pointed to a particularly notable detail: an accumulation of blood on one shingle that had formed a droplet, suggesting a significant amount of blood had pooled on the exterior surface.
Under cross-examination, defense counsel pressed the analyst on whether the red-brown stains had been definitively confirmed as human blood, noting that the witness referred to them by descriptive terminology rather than conclusively identifying their origin.
“We’re not able to look at a red-brown stain and call it blood,” the analyst acknowledged. “We call it by adjectives. We have to wait until we do a confirmatory test.”
The defense also explored the possibility that stains on the interior and exterior window sills could have been left by someone with bloody hands leaning out the window, a theory the analyst conceded was plausible.
“A hand or some sort of bloody object,” the analyst agreed when asked about the transfer stains on the window area.
The analyst confirmed that a knife photographed on the nightstand had left a linear transfer stain consistent with its bloody edge, and that circular stains found on top of that line could not be definitively explained.
During redirect, the prosecution established that when samples are limited, analysts may skip the confirmatory blood test and send evidence directly for DNA analysis, which can identify the specific individual from whom the blood originated.
The defense also raised questions about whether someone climbing out the window would have left a continuous smear down the exterior shingles, to which the analyst agreed that full contact would produce such a pattern.
The testimony came as the trial continues to unfold, with prosecutors building their case against Clancy, who has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of murder in the deaths of her three children.
Clancy allegedly killed her five-year-old daughter and her three-year-old son in the family’s home before attempting to take her own life, with prosecutors arguing she planned the attacks while her husband was out picking up takeout food.
The blood stain analysis provides a critical piece of the prosecution’s evidence, offering jurors a forensic window into the scene investigators encountered when they responded to the home on that tragic January night.
The analyst’s testimony highlighted the sheer volume of blood evidence present in the master bedroom, where prosecutors allege Clancy attacked her children with exercise bands and other implements.
The case continues to draw intense public attention, with the trial expected to feature extensive forensic testimony and expert psychological evidence as the defense pursues its insanity plea.
The proceedings are scheduled to continue, with additional witnesses expected to testify about the collection and testing of evidence from the scene.
