Lindsay Clancy sobbed in court as an emergency room doctor described his attempts to save her 8-month-old son — testimony that came after the jury visited the murder scene Friday.
The 35-year-old former labor and delivery nurse sat at the defense table in a Plymouth, Mass., courtroom visibly shaking from crying so uncontrollably. She had her right hand on her face and occasionally wiped her eyes. She also wiped her nose with a tissue at one point.
The emotional moment came just after Mark Tenerowicz, an emergency room doctor at Beth Israel Deaconess in Plymouth, told the jury about trying for 40 minutes to bring back her middle child, Dawson, before finally declaring him dead.
“He was not breathing, he had no pulse and he was not responding,” Tenerowicz said of the 3-year-old boy when he first arrived.
The doctor continued performing CPR on the toddler, gave him IV fluids and tried to restart his heart with adrenaline, among other treatments, Tenerowicz testified.
“It did not look like his heart would ever start again,” the doctor said.
When Tenerowicz stepped off the witness stand, Lindsay Clancy could be seen weeping, which continued as a second doctor told the jurors about trying to revive her youngest son, Callan.
Benjamin Kaufman, another emergency room doctor at the same hospital, said when the 8-month-old boy was brought in, he wasn’t breathing, but he did regain a heartbeat for roughly 10 minutes.
Still, “at no point did he exhibit any brain function,” Kaufman told the jury.
The baby was eventually flown to Boston Children’s Hospital, which was better equipped to handle a complicated case like his, the doctor explained. Callan did not survive.
Earlier Friday, the 18 jurors — including alternates — were taken by a coach bus to visit three sights: Clancy’s former Duxbury home where the murders were committed and two stops her then husband, Patrick Clancy, made when the killings were alleged to have taken place.
Lindsay Clancy sent Patrick Clancy on two errands while she allegedly strangled her three kids, including daughter Cora, 5, with elastic workout bands, according to testimony and evidence.
The jury drove past the CVS where Patrick Clancy went to pick up children’s medication and to the Plymouth restaurant, ThreeV, where he grabbed take-out before returning home to discover Lindsay Clancy tried to kill herself after allegedly taking the lives of their kids on the evening of Jan. 24, 2023.
The jury members did not exit the bus for CVS or the restaurant, but they were taken by groups of six into the home where the Clancys lived at the time. A lawyer has since bought the house, and the judge allowed the jury viewing, over his objections.
When the jurors returned to court they heard from one Duxbury cop who said he flew by helicopter with a sedated Lindsay Clancy to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston where she nearly died overnight.
Police officer Richard Lippard testified that he heard a “code blue” inside the room he was guarding at the hospital.
“That meant she was dead or dying, right?” Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, asked Lippard.
“Yes,” the cop responded.
The jury also saw for the second time graphic photos of Lindsay Clancy in the hospital with an apparatus in her mouth and a neck brace on. The photos also showed her bloodied wrist and neck wounds.
She sat stone-faced as the images were displayed.
Lindsay Clancy took a medication, sliced her wrists and neck and threw herself from her second-story bedroom window just after killing the kids, according to testimony and evidence.
When Patrick Clancy returned home, he discovered his wife on her back in their backyard before running down to the basement and finding the children lifeless on the floor with bands around their necks, according to the grieving father — who took the witness stand Monday and Wednesday.
Gutting testimony from first responders Thursday painted a grim picture of the state of the kids when cops and paramedics arrived on scene. They described the children having a grayish pallor, blue lips, bloodshot eyes and red marks around their necks.
One veteran cop even appeared to shed tears as he recounted discovering the motionless children on the floor of the basement.
Lindsay Clancy has cried for at least three of the first four days of trial, including when a recording of Patrick Clancy’s anguished 911 call was played out in court and when the pajamas her kids were wearing at the time were displayed in court.
The jury also saw the exercise bands Lindsay Clancy allegedly used for the slayings.
“She killed the kids!” Patrick Clancy was heard saying on the emergency call.
Patrick Clancy, who has since remarried, testified that from September 2022, when Lindsay Clancy’s postpartum depression first set in, to the time of the murders, she had seen five different doctors who prescribed her 15 medications. Lindsay Clancy was taking six drugs at the time of the killings.
She’d also been hospitalized twice for suicidal thoughts during that same time period.
