A Mississippi woman has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting to killing her adult son and carrying out an elaborate scheme that convinced relatives he was still alive for weeks after his death.
Jerri Roby, 69, pleaded guilty to the 2022 death of her 42-year-old son, John Allen Gaither, bringing an end to a case that prosecutors described as one of the most disturbing they had encountered.
Son Reported Missing Before Investigation Unfolded
The investigation began in July 2022, when concerned family members reported Gaither missing after they had been unable to reach him.
Although relatives initially believed he had simply lost contact, investigators soon discovered evidence suggesting someone had been using his phone and social media accounts after his disappearance.
According to prosecutors, those messages were part of a deliberate effort to convince family and friends that Gaither was still alive.
