Alex Murdaugh has returned to court after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his 2023 convictions for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, citing “shocking jury interference” by a court clerk. His retrial is now scheduled to begin on April 5, 2027.
During Monday’s status hearing, Judge Debra McCaslin set the trial date and said she intends to keep the case on schedule. Murdaugh appeared in court wearing a prison jumpsuit and shackles while attorneys addressed pretrial issues.
Defense lawyers argued that additional DNA testing on evidence recovered from Maggie Murdaugh could uncover new information. They also raised concerns that Murdaugh could not receive a fair trial in the same region because of years of intense media coverage and requested a change of venue.
Another dispute centered on whether Murdaugh should be allowed to wear civilian clothes instead of prison attire during future court appearances. Prosecutors argued that prison clothing and restraints are standard for incarcerated defendants, while the judge said she would consider the request.
Although his murder convictions were overturned, Murdaugh remains in prison serving lengthy state and federal sentences after pleading guilty to multiple financial crimes. He continues to deny killing his wife and son.
The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office has pledged to aggressively retry the case. The next pretrial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 14 as both sides continue preparing for what is expected to be another closely watched murder trial.
