Newly released autopsy findings have provided the official cause of death for Texas teenager Daniel Erving, but the case remains surrounded by unanswered questions that continue to trouble his family.
According to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, Daniel died from an accidental drowning after disappearing at Lake Ray Hubbard in April. Investigators say he entered the water, resurfaced once while calling for help, and then vanished beneath the surface before rescuers could reach him. His body was recovered several days later.
While authorities have ruled the death accidental, Daniel’s loved ones remain unconvinced. They have repeatedly questioned how the 18-year-old honor-roll student and experienced high school swimmer could have drowned under the circumstances described by investigators.
The investigation has also uncovered actions taken after Daniel disappeared. Police arrested 19-year-old Lucas Roper and a 17-year-old juvenile, accusing them of tampering with evidence rather than reporting what happened. Authorities allege the pair discarded Daniel’s clothing and cellphone and deleted text messages following the incident. Neither suspect has been charged in connection with Daniel’s death itself.
Daniel was last seen on April 13 before vanishing at the lake. The medical examiner determined he died four days later, on April 17, with the official ruling listing the manner of death as accidental drowning.
Despite that conclusion, Daniel’s family continues to push for more answers. They argue that key details surrounding his final moments remain unexplained and believe the evidence-tampering allegations only deepen the mystery. As the criminal case against the two teens moves forward, the Erving family says they will continue seeking the full truth about what happened that day.
