Tucked deep in the southwestern corner of the Commonwealth, Weiss County sits in the heart of Appalachia, where winding [music] two-lane roads cut through steep ridges, coal towns cling to the mountain sides, and Friday night [music] football means everything. And it’s the kind of place where everybody knows everybody. Teachers are neighbors, coaches are community leaders, and news travels fast. And boy did it. The very community that had been cheering on this coach as he racked up an undefeated season was wondering how this all could have happened. Were there any signs missed? How did he know the police were coming after him? And why did the school board stop the community from speaking out in the aftermath of this troubling situation? And in this small town, frustration is boiling over as locals prepare to face the school board for the first time since everything fell apart. It’s up in the hills behind me where an exhaustive search has been ongoing for now well over a month for a football coach, Travis Turner. In the midst of that winning season, as you can see, there’s a lot of elevation, highly steep, difficult to navigate, not just for search crews, but for this fugitive who’s been trying to escape from law enforcement. Many people wondering how he was able to know that the walls were closing in from police as they were apparently on their way to search his home just hours after he disappeared. As the community was on edge and his disappearance quickly gained [music] national attention, police made a stunning revelation. Coach Turner vanished just hours before police were set to search his home. Investigators revealed they were looking into allegations that Turner had inappropriate online communication with someone underage. They obtained 10 felony warrants tied to those allegations. And in an instant, he went from being a respected local coach and community leader to a wanted fugitive. According to a statement released through the family’s attorney hours before police were set to search his home, Travis Turner was last seen walking off into the woods near his home with a firearm. He said it was something he’d done before over the years, but this time he didn’t come back that night. By evening, concern turned into alarm, and his wife contacted authorities to report him missing, [music] setting off a massive search in steep, heavily wooded terrain while investigators behind the scenes were pursuing the disturbing charges. How we could have known that investigators were on the verge of conducting a search warrant at his home. There’s going to be a meeting soon about this matter and a lot of locals are really wondering what exactly is going on here. Locals are speaking out in the midst of this situation that’s caught the attention of Americans all throughout the country. In a small town, they say silence is golden. But in Wise County, silence is dangerous. After Turner disappeared, parents flocked to the school board demanding the truth. Instead, they were told [music] there would be no open expression, no questions, no public comments in a ๐๐ฝ๐ธ๐ธ๐๐พ๐๐ announcement from the chair of the school board. Outraged members of the community accused the school board of attempting to sweep it under the rug. And they say this was far from the first time something like this had happened. Meanwhile, local, state, and federal officials worked tirelessly to search that steep mountainous terrain where the family says Travis Turner simply walked off into the woods. But when you look at the area where he’s said to have walked off, it’s the kind of steep, unforgiving terrain that should leave some kind of trail. And yet, despite months now of search efforts with access to air support, drones, and technology, [music] there’s been no sign of him. No articles of clothing, no personal items, no confirmed sightings, [music] nothing that explains how someone can step into the wilderness and for so long leave without a trace. It’s striking to see just how steep the mountainous terrain is here in the general vicinity of where Coach Turner disappeared. It’s a challenge for anyone, even those who work out with a regular basis, to survive in the elements like this. Not just going out into the woods and flat ground, but with highly steep terrain. It’s going to make it difficult for Turner while he’s trying to escape. And also for officials who are searching the area, and it’s very quiet out here. It’s an eerie feeling. No one’s around and seemingly he could be anywhere near us. Still hasn’t been found as the search enters into a second month. In a town [music] like this, an undefeated football coach carries real influence. Schoolboard members know him. Administrators know him. Families trust him. Travis Turner was winning and deeply woven into the school system, which is why some in the community believe his status may have clouded judgment when the case first surfaced. Even now, Turner is believed to still be an employee of the school district, a detail that has not gone unnoticed from locals. When the board moved to block public comment at a key meeting, instead of easing tensions, it had the opposite effect. It fueled suspicion. People began to ask whether he was being protected and whether someone may have quietly tipped him off before investigators arrived. How does one simply climb up into these mountains and disappear? We’re heading now to the football stadium where in the midst of that undefeated season, these kids have worked so hard to get to where they were in the midst of that season, their head coach disappears. When you’re an undefeated high school football coach, you’re a friend to [music] everyone. Everybody had to have known him in this community. and he seemed to have advanced knowledge of what was about to happen. And now he’s just vanished into thin thin air and [music] in extremely difficult conditions here. As you can see, Champions Avenue, it says it all. In a small town [music] like this, sports are everything. Indeed, sports are everything in this community. [music] Even the street leading into the high school is called Champions Way. A quiet but telling sign of what’s expected here. Winning isn’t a bonus, it’s the standard. We stopped by the high school on the way in and it was impossible to miss how central [music] it is to the town. Tucked into the hills framed by the mountainside. And it’s a vast area, but also one that only an experienced survivalist would be able to endure. This is a beautiful patriotic community. There’s an American flag on nearly every porch here. It’s a bluecollar community. Hardworking people, the best of this country. These are the kind of towns that are the backbone of America. You can see the coal industry is here. Think about how much work has gone into not just keeping this community afloat, but the work they’ve put in to keep this country afloat. And so often these are our forgotten members of society. When you walk the neighborhoods near where Turner disappeared, the terrain tells its own story. Surrounded by steep mountains on all sides, the area feels closed in. The ridge lines rise fast, the slopes drop hard, and the woods swallow the sound. It’s the kind of terrain that looks beautiful from a distance, but turns brutal up close for search crews looking for Turner. Standing here, you get a sense very near where he disappeared. Just how much elevation there is. Totally surrounded by mountains, frigid temperatures, and a missing football coach who turned into a fugitive. And now 2 months in, not a trace, no evidence, no articles of clothing found in the woods. No tents. His family says he disappeared into the woods. He walked off with a firearm. Is that what actually happened? We headed toward the general area where Coach Turner is believed to have wandered into the woods and the silence was striking. No traffic, no voices, just wind in the trees and the weight of the mountains pressing in. It felt eerie, especially knowing that somewhere beyond the tree line, he could still be out there, possibly nearby. This is the general location where Coach Travis Turner disappeared. As the walls were closing in around him, it seems that he might have known that law enforcement was getting ready to move on him. But what’s particularly interesting is [music] just how steep this terrain is. Even someone who works out regularly with that elevation is going to have a difficult time. And to add [music] to that, search teams. This is a very remote area and the search [music] teams are not going to be able to get a lot of resources in here. It’s a great distance from any dense population area. Obviously, investigators are already spread thin in these areas where budgets [music] are small. Federal resources have tried to get involved and help where they can. Even though when you look at the map, you can see that there’s a lot of space. Presumably, he would be limited in the space he could cover because of just how steep [music] this is, unless he’s some sort of a Olympic climber. And in these quiet neighborhoods, almost immediately, another question set in. Did he really simply walk away on his own into the woods and [music] vanish without a trace, without any scattered clothing or personal items in the weeks since his disappearance? In a town this small, with a coach this well-connected, the question has lingered. You get the sense here just how quiet this neighborhood is that’s been caught in national attention now with this exhaustive search. And it’s really interesting to see [music] here in person the elevation of these mountainous areas. And we’re told he walked out of his home, told his family he was going for a walk and into these mountains. Not in this exact area, but up into this general hillside. And the most chilling aspect of it is that his family says that he was [music] carrying a firearm. One of the biggest questions about all of this is if he was able to know that police were closing in, would it be possible that he could have also had help escaping [music] a high school football coach in the midst of an undefeated season? In a small town like this, they’re treated like heroes. We stopped by the school in the stadium on the way into town. [music] This is the place where these students have poured in the work. Early mornings, bruising practices, conditioning in the heat, film sessions, the grind that builds a season, and for some, a future beyond these mountains. None [music] of them asked for any of this. They showed up believing in the structure around them, trusting the [music] adults in charge, trusting the man leading them. And then overnight, one coach’s actions [music] threw everything into chaos, turning what should have been about football into something far heavier that these [music] players never signed up to carry. Here’s Union High School that’s been gripped in the midst of this controversy that nobody [music] asked for. None of these players, none of the staff, no one in this community, [music] such a quiet town, such a beautiful place. They never could have imagined that someone everybody trusted, [music] everybody believed in. You got to imagine, everybody had to have known him. This is Bullet Park, Phil Robbins Field. The town shuts down every Friday night here for this, the epicenter of any beautiful American small town built around that [music] local high school football program. And here in Big Stone Gap, the Bears built up quite the season, built up quite the program, a lot of hard work under the leadership of a coach who’s now a wanted fugitive. You can see the signs of the strong industry that was once here that has moved out of this community and communities like it that have devastated their local economies. Locals are gearing up tonight for what’s expected to be a highly contentious schoolboard meeting after many say they were denied the right to speak at the last one. Emotions have been building for weeks and the community is arriving with one demand, answers. One thing’s for sure, this isn’t a situation that’s going to go away. And people here are making it clear. These board members will face questions and make changes or the town will replace them with leaders who will. Tonight, the Wise County School Board meeting is going to take place after weeks and weeks of frustration. At the last meeting, all of these concerned parents showed up wondering, did the school know anything more? [music] How did he know to leave? This whole thing is so bizarre. And apparently, there was advanced notice of an investigation prior to this. The school maybe was going to take some action, but the parents weren’t allowed to speak. and they vowed that they were going to show up tonight and they were going to speak to protect these kids. And that is clearly, as I’ve just gotten here, what they plan to do. It’s going to be a standing room only meeting, cars and overflow parking here. We’re going to head inside now and see what these parents, what these locals had to say about how this could have happened, how these children who trusted their coach, who was in this leadership position in not just the high school, but in the community at large was able to allegedly engage in such disturbing and disgusting [music] behavior. Here we go. When there is this much ๐ช๐ซ๐พ๐ผ๐ฎ, it’s not just a few bad apples. It is a culture. The fish rots from the head down. Since [music] this most current mess of a situation has been ๐ฎ๐๐น๐ธ๐ผ๐ฎ๐ญ, the amount of stories from people who are too scared to come forward for fear of their reputations being tarnished truly sickens me. Why is it that so many of these reported and unreported cases have happened in this county under this leadership? Why is it that the stories I hear from students and parents all end with the same phrase, [music] they wanted to sweep it under the rug? Because from where I’m standing, it seems that the people you are trying to protect are not the kids the but it’s the reputations of the administrators and the school board has been complicit. I come here tonight not in order to ask you to provide us with detailed information of the Turner case, but to provide us with information on how policies will be implemented moving forward. I want to see radical change and who represents our kids on this board in this administration and in this county. I want to see the people who have allowed this ๐ช๐ซ๐พ๐ผ๐ฎ to continue to step down. And finally, I want to see radical change in how we treat offenders and they will be replaced in the next election because this community is done with sweeping it under the rug. Police or social services were not notified like they should have been. They are mandated reporters by law enforcements. The school was called the next day by the law enforcements, not the school principal reporting the matter, mandated reporter. Um, and no SRO knew about the incident. The case was unfounded. They said it was a catfishing incident. Without even doing an investigation, the principal told the SRO that he did not need to be investigated. Police did not need to be involved. This is not typically how these situations are handled. They usually call law enforcements and social services and get them involved from the beginning. Why was this one handled differently? What was the school hiding? A football coach with an undefeated record getting [music] ready to play playoff day. Tonight, Travis Turner is still missing. No sightings, no trace, no answers. And after that heated schoolboard meeting, it’s clear this isn’t going away. Now the spotlight is not only on a missing coach, but on the system around him, a school board under scrutiny. Questions about what was known and when.
