A tragic case has emerged from Mississippi, where a 17-year-old is facing serious charges in the deaths of an elderly couple he reportedly knew well. Cordarius Hobbs is accused of fatally shooting 74-year-old Billy Blair and his 71-year-old wife, Virginia Carol Blair, during an alleged home invasion that took place on June 3 in Mendenhall.
During a preliminary court hearing, family members of Hobbs revealed that he had previously worked for the Blairs, performing tasks such as cleaning their home. This revelation has raised questions about the motive behind the alleged crime. Hobbs’ grandfather, Billy Newsome, expressed his belief in his grandson’s innocence, questioning why Hobbs would target a couple he had a relationship with.
“Why would you rob someone you worked for?” Newsome asked, suggesting that the circumstances surrounding the incident don’t add up.
The timeline of events began on the morning of June 3, when contractors installing a generator at the Blairs’ residence noticed Carol Blair’s car door ajar, with firearms visible inside. This prompted them to contact the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department for a welfare check around 11:30 a. m.
However, by noon, officers responding to the scene were met with gunfire, leading to a standoff that lasted nearly two hours.
Hobbs was apprehended after attempting to flee from law enforcement, reportedly unarmed at the time of his capture. Disturbingly, investigators found Carol Blair in a bedroom, curled up in a fetal position, having suffered three gunshot wounds to the back of her head. Billy Blair was discovered in the kitchen, also with multiple gunshot wounds to his face.
A total of three firearms and 280 shell casings, all registered to Billy Blair, were recovered from the home.
Defense attorney Zachary Vaugh has argued that there is insufficient forensic evidence linking Hobbs directly to the shootings. He pointed out that the manner in which the victims were shot raises questions about whether someone else could have been involved. “There’s a lot of things that are possible,” Vaugh stated, emphasizing the lack of eyewitness identification of Hobbs at the time of the incident.
Facing two counts of capital murder and one count of burglary, along with ten additional charges, Hobbs has been denied bond. The couple’s family has publicly expressed their grief, stating, “We are crushed in spirit, bruised, and brokenhearted, but we are not alone.”
Friends of the Blairs have shared their shock and sorrow over the loss, remembering them as selfless individuals who would go out of their way to help others. “They were just good people,” said Jason Busby, a friend of the couple.
