Ferrari F1 boss Fred Vasseur plans clear the air talks with Toto Wolff

Tensions are brewing in the world of Formula 1 as Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vasseur, prepares to address a recent spat with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. After comments made by Wolff sparked confusion, Vasseur is eager to clear the air and restore harmony between their teams.

Following the British Grand Prix, Mercedes continues to dominate the constructors’ championship and drivers’ standings, largely thanks to the impressive performances of Kimi Antonelli. However, Ferrari is making strides, with both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc celebrating victories in recent races, signaling a potential shift in momentum.

Both drivers are undoubtedly relieved to have ended their win droughts this season, a success attributed to Ferrari’s bold upgrade strategy. Vasseur’s team has rolled out several significant enhancements over recent weekends, prompting Wolff to raise concerns about Ferrari’s development pace.

Wolff’s remarks before the Silverstone race hinted that Ferrari might face challenges adhering to the F1 cost cap if they continued their aggressive upgrade path. “Ferrari has piled on countless modifications,” he noted, suggesting that their financial flexibility might soon be tested. “We’ll have to see where that takes them,” he added.

Vasseur, however, took issue with Wolff’s comments, perceiving them as an insinuation of wrongdoing. During a press conference at Silverstone, he responded sharply, pointing out the irony in Wolff’s statement. “When Red Bull is developing or when Mercedes is developing, they are genius. When we are developing, we are 𝒸𝒽𝑒𝒶𝓉𝒾𝓃𝑔,” Vasseur stated, questioning the fairness of the implications.

When pressed on whether he felt Wolff was accusing Ferrari of exceeding the budget cap, Vasseur confirmed that he interpreted the comments in that light, adding fuel to the fire of their rivalry.

Despite the heated exchange, Wolff later clarified that there were no lingering hard feelings. He suggested that Vasseur’s emotional reaction may have clouded his understanding of the original comments. “If you would have read my comments, rather than just a headline, he would have seen that what I said was an observation,” Wolff explained, emphasizing the passion that often accompanies competitive sports.

Vasseur echoed this sentiment in a separate interview, expressing confidence that the incident wouldn’t harm their relationship. He announced plans to sit down with Wolff during the upcoming summer break at the end of July to discuss their differences and move forward.
