A tragic incident that shook Northeast Ohio is now the focus of a gripping new Netflix documentary. The film delves into the harrowing details of a high-speed crash in Strongsville that claimed the lives of two young men and led to the murder conviction of the driver, Mackenzie Shirilla.
On July 31, 2022, the fatal crash took the lives of 19-year-old Davion Flanagan, a recent graduate of Strongsville High School, and 20-year-old Dominic Russo, who was Shirilla’s boyfriend. At just 17 years old, Shirilla was found guilty in 2023 on multiple charges, including two counts of murder. Prosecutors argued that she deliberately accelerated her vehicle to an alarming 100 mph before crashing into a brick building.

The investigation revealed critical evidence from the vehicle’s “black box,” which indicated that Shirilla had pressed the accelerator fully and did not attempt to brake before the collision. This information played a significant role in the trial, where jurors ultimately convicted her on 12 counts.
The newly released Netflix documentary, which premiered on May 15, revisits this tragic case and features exclusive interviews with Shirilla, who insists that the crash was not a deliberate act. “Anyone can see there’s no intent,” she stated during her interview, expressing her belief that she has no memory of the events leading up to the crash. “I just wanna say my truth,” she added, adamantly declaring, “I am not a monster…I am not a murderer.”
Reflecting on her relationship with Dominic, Shirilla described their bond as “young love” that was “rocky but good.” Despite her conviction, her legal team continues to pursue an appeal, though previous attempts have been upheld by the courts.
As this documentary sheds light on a case filled with emotion and tragedy, it raises questions about accountability, memory, and the complexities of young love. What will the future hold for Shirilla as she navigates the aftermath of that fateful day?
