FBI Says Ransom Notes in Nancy Guthrie Case Were Fake, Deepening Mystery Surrounding Her Disappearance

Federal investigators have made a major breakthrough in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, after determining that the ransom notes sent in connection with the case were not genuine.

The finding eliminates what investigators once considered a possible line of communication with whoever may have taken Guthrie, while leaving authorities with even more unanswered questions nearly five months after she vanished from her home in Arizona.

FBI Rules Ransom Messages Were Fraudulent

According to Reuters, the FBI has concluded that all three messages linked to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance were fraudulent and were not sent by anyone connected to her alleged kidnapping.

The first two notes demanded payment in cryptocurrency, while another message claimed to contain information about those responsible for her disappearance.

Investigators traced the first two communications to the same source. To test whether the sender was genuine, the FBI deposited money into the cryptocurrency account provided in one of the messages. Officials said the funds were never accessed, reinforcing the conclusion that the demands were part of a hoax rather than a legitimate ransom attempt.

Disappearance Remains an Active Kidnapping Investigation

Despite dismissing the ransom notes as fake, authorities stressed that the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active.

The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department continue to investigate the case as a kidnapping for ransom.

Officials say detectives are pursuing every credible lead and have not identified or arrested any suspects.

Nancy Guthrie Vanished From Her Arizona Home

Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home near Tucson on February 1.

Investigators previously said evidence at the residence suggested she had been taken against her will. Blood identified as Guthrie’s was found near the front entrance, and surveillance footage captured a masked individual outside the home during the early morning hours before she vanished.

Authorities have spent months searching surrounding desert areas, reviewing surveillance footage, examining forensic evidence, and following tips from the public.

Family Continues Plea for Answers

Throughout the investigation, Savannah Guthrie has made several emotional public appeals, urging anyone with information to contact law enforcement.

The Guthrie family has also offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s recovery, while the FBI continues offering its own reward as investigators search for answers.

Although officials have now ruled out the ransom notes as authentic, investigators caution that the discovery does not change the underlying criminal investigation or lessen the urgency of locating Nancy Guthrie.

Mystery Deepens as Search Continues

With the ransom communications now believed to be hoaxes, investigators have lost one potential avenue that initially appeared connected to the case.

Authorities have not disclosed whether they believe the fake messages were attempts to extort money, interfere with the investigation, or simply exploit a high-profile disappearance.

Nearly five months after Nancy Guthrie vanished, investigators continue searching for evidence that could explain what happened that night. Until those answers emerge, the disappearance remains one of the country’s most closely watched unresolved criminal investigations.
