Taylor Sheridan’s latest western saga, Lawman: Bass Reeves, is finally getting the recognition it deserves after making its debut on Netflix. This gripping series, which has been overshadowed by the monumental success of Yellowstone and its spin-offs, has surged in popularity since its arrival on the streaming platform.
Originally released in 2023, Lawman: Bass Reeves tells the remarkable story of Bass Reeves, the first Black U.S. Marshal, portrayed masterfully by David Oyelowo. The series dives into Reeves’ life, showcasing his journey from a runaway slave to a legendary lawman, all while navigating the rampant prejudice of the 19th century.
After three years on Paramount+ and the Paramount Network, the show has found a new home on Netflix, where it quickly climbed the global streaming charts. During its first week, Lawman: Bass Reeves garnered an impressive 3.3 million views, translating to over 20 million hours watched, making it the sixth most popular series on the platform before it was eventually removed from the Top 10.

Despite its recent success, many still regard Lawman: Bass Reeves as one of Sheridan’s most underrated works. Created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Sheridan, the series not only highlights the action-packed storytelling fans have come to expect but also features a stellar supporting cast, including Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Donald Sutherland, and Dennis Quaid.

While Yellowstone may have dominated the conversation for years, Sheridan continues to expand his universe with prequels like 1883 and 1923, alongside new titles such as Dutton Ranch and Marshals. As fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming 1944, which will explore the Dutton family during the final days of World War II, one has to wonder: what other stories from the past are waiting to be uncovered?
