In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 revelation, a retired NYPD detective described the silencer found on a 3D-printed gun linked to the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as something he had never encountered in his extensive career. The details surrounding this high-profile case continue to unravel, leaving many questions in its wake.
Detective Sgt. John Griffin, who spent 25 years in the NYPD’s major crimes unit, was taken aback by the unique suppressor attached to the weapon used in the December 2024 Midtown slaying. “It was clear that we were dealing with a semi-automatic firearm, but the suppressor was unlike anything I had seen before,” he shared during an interview with Dateline.
Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League-educated suspect accused of fatally shooting Thompson on a busy Midtown sidewalk, returned to Manhattan court recently for a critical evidence hearing that could significantly impact his case. The 28-year-old was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a tense five-day manhunt, during which police discovered the 3D-printed gun in his backpack.

In a manifesto found alongside the weapon, Mangione expressed his intent to “rebel against the deadly, greed-fueled health insurance cartel,” targeting a company he claimed “literally extracts human life force for money.” Shell casings collected from the crime scene reportedly bore phrases that echoed the language used by health care companies to deny coverage claims.

As the trial approaches, jurors will be presented with both the alleged murder weapon and Mangione’s journal, following a Manhattan judge’s ruling that the Altoona police conducted a lawful search of his belongings post-arrest. Mangione faces serious charges that could lead to a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. He is also involved in a separate federal case related to Thompson’s death.
Currently, Mangione remains behind bars at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, having pleaded not guilty in both cases. As the legal proceedings unfold, many are left wondering what revelations will emerge next in this gripping saga.
