Kung Fu Panda 5 (2027) – Jack Black, Awkwafina | The Furious Five are coming back !

DreamWorks Animation has confirmed that Kung Fu Panda 5 is in development, with industry projections pointing toward a 2027 theatrical release. Following the massive box office success of Kung Fu Panda 4, which earned over $533 million worldwide and became the franchise’s third highest-grossing installment, the studio has signaled its commitment to continuing Po’s journey as the beginning of a new trilogy.

Jack Black is confirmed to return as the voice of Po, the former Dragon Warrior now serving as Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. Awkwafina reprises her role as Zhen, the corsac fox who took up the Dragon Warrior mantle at the end of the fourth film. Director Mike Mitchell, who helmed Kung Fu Panda 4, has indicated that the next installment will take approximately three years to produce given the complexity of animated sequels, placing the earliest realistic release window in 2027. Mitchell has emphasized that the team has many ideas that could not fit into the fourth film but are being reserved for future installments, and that the challenge of making each sequel significantly better than its predecessor is what drives the extended development timeline.

The Furious Five, voiced by Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Jackie Chan, and Seth Rogen, are expected to return in expanded roles after their absence from the fourth film disappointed longtime fans. Mitchell has acknowledged the fan frustration and confirmed that the next chapter will bring back the beloved team in a meaningful way, with their dynamic with both Po and Zhen serving as a central emotional thread. The franchise’s new direction, which positions Zhen as the active Dragon Warrior while Po transitions into a mentorship role, creates natural tension and comedy that the returning team can play against.
