In a tragic turn of events, a Pennsylvania mother is facing serious charges after leaving her young children alone at home, where a devastating fire broke out, claiming their lives. Danozjna Shalita Marjie Williams, just 22 years old, is now at the center of a heartbreaking investigation.

On March 29, Williams reportedly left her children unattended in their Erie apartment while she made a trip to Walmart. However, authorities claim that her absence lasted nearly an hour, during which a fire erupted in the home. The Erie County District Attorney’s Office stated that Williams was allegedly involved in a drug transaction during this critical time.

Firefighters arrived at the scene around 4:30 p.m. to find flames engulfing the second floor ofthe building. Images shared by local firefighters depicted a scene of chaos, with flames bursting through windows and creating perilous conditions for rescue efforts. Firefighters struggled to access the interior due to obstacles blocking their path, including a mattress and a couch.

Inside, they discovered three children alone in a bedroom. Tragically, two of them, identified in court documents as T.H. and D.H., were pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital. A third child, referred to as A-A-M, was later flown to a children’s hospital but succumbed to injuries days later.

Reports indicate that Williams returned to the scene in a black Dodge Charger about 20 minutes after firefighters arrived, following a call from her landlord alerting her to the fire. While she claimed her brother was supposed to be watching the children and that she had only stepped out for a brief errand, surveillance footage revealed a different story. It showed her leaving the apartment at 4:01 p.m. and not returning until 4:51 p.m., with no evidence of her visiting either of the nearby Walmarts.

Instead, authorities allege that she was traveling to Corry, Pennsylvania, to sell a significant quantity of heroin or fentanyl. Reports suggest that this was not the first time Williams had left her children unsupervised.

“This is a heartbreaking, but completely preventable tragedy,” Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz remarked, emphasizing the dire consequences of abandoning her parental responsibilities. “The evidence shows these young children were left without supervision in a situation where they needed their mother to protect them and keep them safe.”

The fire, which reportedly started in the kitchen on the second floor, still has an unclear cause. Williams is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 28, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating incident. How will this tragedy impact the lives of those left behind?
