A brutal late-night encounter in one of Los Angeles’ most exclusive neighborhoods has left a community shaken and a 19-year-old facing a murder charge.
Conoray Lawantara was arrested on suspicion of murder after an alleged Sunday night confrontation in a Beverly Hills alleyway on the 400 block of North Palm Drive — just behind the apartment where neighbors say he lives with his girlfriend. Police say the altercation turned deadly when a homeless man was stabbed in the neck.
The Beverly Hills Police Department received reports of a fight between two men around 11:39 p. m. Officers arrived to find Lawantara and the unidentified homeless man suffering from a serious stab wound, according to authorities.
Emergency crews treated the victim at the scene before rushing him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Lawantara was also transported for treatment of injuries and remains there, police said.
Now, gripping video from the scene is circulating, capturing the suspect’s statements to officers while sitting handcuffed on the pavement.
“He reached for me and at that time I produced a CCW — it’s a 3.9 inch knife,” Lawantara is heard telling police in one clip. “I went for him because he was pulling at me.”
The teen allegedly claimed he told the man to let go but he refused. Another recording catches him telling investigators, “He kept pulling at me,” and “I tried going away.”
Neighbors told reporters the homeless man had been rummaging through trash cans when Lawantara confronted him, and the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
Disturbing footage captured in the immediate aftermath shows the victim lying in the alley, moaning in pain, as authorities worked to save his life.
Residents of the upscale neighborhood — where homes routinely sell for $2 million or more — described a scene straight out of a crime 𝒹𝓇𝒶𝓂𝒶.
“The police were trying to revive this poor man that was lying there with blood, like it was in ‘CSI,'” one neighbor said, describing “pools of blood all around.”
Locals say homeless individuals frequently pass through the alley behind North Palm Drive, but they typically don’t cause problems. Lawantara and his girlfriend reportedly moved into the area just weeks before the incident.
BHPD detectives are continuing their investigation into exactly what unfolded that night.
What really happened in those final moments before everything turned deadly?
