The night everything fell apart, my girlfriend asked me to check her phone—and I noticed it was connected to my best friend’s Wi-Fi. I tried to rationalize it, but that small detail planted a seed...

I’m 26, and I’ve been with my girlfriend for over a year. We were seriously talking about moving in together. Last night, we went out to dinner and agreed I’d move into her place when my lease ended in April. I texted my best friend, Jake, to tell him the news.

He offered to buy us drinks and said we could crash at his place. We were all getting along great, but something felt off. When we got to his house, she needed to use the bathroom, so we went inside quickly. She left her phone on the table and ran off.

While we were waiting, her phone buzzed. She asked me to check it for her. That’s when I noticed her phone was connected to a Wi-Fi network. I checked my own phone—every network there had a passcode.

Why would her phone automatically connect to Wi-Fi at Jake’s house? I tried to make excuses, like maybe she had an ex nearby, but she just got a new phone three months ago. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to lose both of them over something small.

But I can’t shake this gut feeling. Update four days later: After reading all the comments, I spoke with her two nights ago. I told her straight up that I saw her phone connected to Wi-Fi. She went quiet, then claimed it might have connected to a local shop.

I almost believed her, until I remember how she opened the correct cabinet to get glasses without asking. That wasn’t a coincidence. She broke down and confessed. She’d spent a couple of nights with Jake weeks ago.

He messaged her on Facebook, and they kept it purely physical. She said it was a mistake, that there were no feelings. But it doesn’t matter. I feel betrayed by both of them.

I shut them out and I’m trying to process everything. Her betrayal hurt, but his hurts even more. You expect a partner could cheat, but you never think your best friend would. I don’t even know if she’s telling the truth about him initiating it.

Trust is gone. I’m glad I found out before we moved in together. I just don’t know how I’ll get over this one.
