On a rainy Tuesday night, I came home from work and heard something by my red door. I looked down and found a brown basket, getting soaked in the storm. Inside, wrapped in a blue blanket, was a tiny baby, crying and cold. I couldn’t believe who left him.

I looked up and down the street, shouted for someone, but it was just me and him. There was a note. It said, “Please love him. I cannot.

I panicked. I had no idea what babies need, but I couldn’t leave him in the cold. I brought him inside, warmed him up, and held him so he’d stop shaking. He looked at me with big dark eyes and I felt something I had never felt before.

I named him Leo and got help from my neighbor, Mrs. Miller, who knew how to feed him. The police came and said they’d have to take him away. I asked them to let me take care of him.

They agreed, and I kept him for days, then weeks. I fell for him completely. Then one Sunday, I got a phone call. A young voice said, “The brown basket with the blue blanket.

” It was his mother. She came to my house. She was just a scared, homeless teenager named Anna. She told me how she tried to keep him but couldn’t survive on the streets.

She told me she chose me and my warm, safe house. I expected her to take him back. But she looked at him, smiled through her tears, and said, “I cannot take him. I want him to stay here.

I told her the police were looking for her. I offered her help. But she kept her promise to go to the police and give me her baby. Months went by.

On the exact one-year anniversary of finding him, I stood in front of a judge with Leo and Anna watching. The judge said, “Leo is now your son. Congratulations, Mom. ”

My house is not quiet anymore.

Leo runs and jumps on my bed in the morning and makes me laugh every day. I was so scared of the change, but I opened my door and my heart. I found a baby who wasn’t mine. Now I know, he was always meant to be my son.

And I am the luckiest mother in the whole world.
