The watch was gone. I searched everywhere—the bedroom, the car, the kids’ rooms—but it was like it vanished into thin air. It was expensive, and when I asked my wife Grace about it, she seemed shaken, but she claimed she had no idea. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, and with the kids in the house, I decided to install cameras, both outside and inside.

It took me over a month to finally do it, but I’m a tech-oriented person, so it wasn’t hard. Grace was home when I put up the outdoor ones, but she went out with the kids before I set up the indoor ones. I think that was a happy coincidence because she never seemed fully aware of those inside. I went to work one day like usual, came home, and was making a snack in the kitchen while she got ready for bed.
I decided to casually scroll through the day’s footage. It seemed safe at first, but then I saw two adults walk through the living room. I didn’t recognize the man, but I didn’t panic—maybe it was a friend or a repair guy. Then I fast-forwarded over an hour, and I saw her and this person walk back toward the door.
The worst part? They stopped right at the edge of the camera frame, two feet back. He grabbed her butt, pulled her close, and she giggled. They looked at each other, and then they left.
It was only about twenty seconds, but it destroyed me. I had no idea she was having an affair. I was in serious denial, trying to find any other explanation, but there wasn’t one. I didn’t know what to do.
Confront her? Try to learn more? I was baffled. I saved the video to my phone and headed upstairs with the best poker face I could manage.
I couldn’t even imagine touching her, knowing what I’d just seen. I felt sick. I needed help, but I was completely out of ideas. A few days later, I finally brought her attention to the cameras.
I had taken the kids to an amusement park for the entire day, knowing there was no way her affair partner would come over if I might return at any moment. I didn’t look at the footage while I was out, even though it gnawed at me. Seeing my kids happy was the highlight of the day, but it was soured by thoughts of what she was doing. When we got home and the kids were asleep, I watched the footage.
Sure enough, her affair partner showed up. They were making out on the couch, then headed to the bedroom about ten minutes later. I saved the videos and backed them up to my Google Drive, just in case something happened to my phone. Then I marched upstairs and confronted her.
“Why are you cheating on me? ” I asked. I felt stupid for not rehearsing, but that’s what I truly wanted to know first. She just looked at me baffled.
She asked what I was talking about, and I told her I knew. She denied it. I said we could stop pretending, but she denied it again. When I told her I had evidence and revealed the cameras inside the house, her shock was evident.
She asked to see the evidence, and I played the videos for her. Her face didn’t change; she didn’t say a word. Then she snatched my phone and spiked it to the ground. She tried to step on it, but I grabbed it first.
I wanted to scream, but the kids were sleeping, so I walked out to cool off. When I came back from a nighttime walk, she wanted to talk. She said she didn’t know what came over her. I asked if she meant breaking my phone or sleeping with another man.
She was caught off guard and couldn’t say either. I told her the only path forward was divorce, and she shouldn’t try to dissuade me. She didn’t at first, but in later days she got more aggressive. She eventually claimed she’d milk me for everything I had.
I laughed and reminded her the court wouldn’t reward her for being a cheater caught in 4K. Her face looked the scariest I’d ever seen. I hadn’t fixed my broken phone, so I was using my iPad. While I sat on the couch, she came out from the bedroom, dropped my phone in my lap soaking wet.
“So much for your evidence,” she said. I realized how little I could predict her anymore. She was a different person. I worried about my safety around her.
But she wasn’t a tech person, so she probably didn’t factor cloud storage into her equation. I put the phone in my pocket and told her I was leaving. I wanted to take the kids, but I was scared things would get messy and they could get hurt. So I called her mother, told her to pack a few things and stay at the house.
Before her mom arrived, I was out of there. A few days later, I got a divorce lawyer and served her with papers. Her mother took the kids to her place, which settled me better. The divorce happened, and she fought tooth and nail for everything.
I knew I’d have to pay alimony and child support since she was a stay-at-home mom. We got 50/50 custody, which I hated. The judge seemed sympathetic to her. I managed to keep the cars since they were in my name, but I got screwed over for the most part.
I presented all my evidence in court, and she was shocked to see it, having thought she destroyed my phone. But it didn’t matter much. As we passed by each other after the proceedings, she smirked and said, “Those videos sure helped, right? ” At that moment, I realized I hated whoever she had become.
That’s when I decided to do one last thing to punish her. I created a group chat with every person on my phone who knew her—57 people. I cut out the explicit parts but made sure everyone got the gist. I sent the footage to all of them.
I got flooded with messages and calls, including from her, but I didn’t answer any. The video was clear enough. She had no idea where to find me since I was kicked out of the house I bought. All she could do was send angry texts.
Each one made me smile a little more. Eventually, one of her sisters called and said she understood why the divorce happened. She sounded disapproving of Grace, and it felt nice to have someone from her side acknowledge what a bad person she was. I’m divorced now.
My kids shuffle between two homes, which I didn’t want, but I feel like growing up in a peaceful single home is better than constant fighting. I’m glad this nightmare is finally over.
