I came home early from work that day because I couldn’t stop thinking about what I’d found on my wife’s phone the night before. I was sick with worry, imagining her with him, and I needed to know for sure. When I pulled up to our house, I saw a black sedan parked on the curb outside. My heart sank.

I knew it before I even opened the door. I walked in and there he was, on top of my wife, right there on our living room couch. As soon as I entered, he scrambled off her and she grabbed at her clothes on the floor. Before I could even get a word out, she looked at me like I was the intruder and said, “What the f*** are you doing?

The tone was so accusatory. Like I was somehow wrong for coming home to my own house. Like she wasn’t the one naked on the couch with another man. I told her to shut the f*** up, and I pointed an angry finger at her.

I was shaking with fury. That was when her affair partner, a guy I later confirmed was named Dennis, decided to play hero. He told me to watch the way I spoke to her. I was tempted to deck him right then.

I told him he had no right to tell me how to speak to my own wife. I pulled out my phone and started recording. I couldn’t believe how ridiculous the situation was. Here he was, trying to act like the protector, standing naked in my living room.

I told him to get out of my house. He just stood there, trying to look threatening. I called her every name I could think of. I can’t even remember half of what I said.

It just came out of me, fueled by rage. She looked scared. I’d never been that angry in front of her before. When I took a step forward, Dennis stood in front of me and put a hand on my chest to stop me.

I reminded him that he was in my house, that he had no right to stop me from approaching my own wife. I pushed him away. That was when everything moved incredibly fast. He threw a punch at me.

It connected right on my jaw, and I hit the floor. I got back up immediately and charged at him. At one point I had him on the couch, one hand around his throat. I wasn’t trying to kill him.

He was trying to fight back, but I’m bigger than him. Then I heard a loud noise and felt a burst of pain. I didn’t understand what happened until much later. Rose, the woman I had shared vows with, had smashed a ceramic ornament over my head.

Because of the man she was cheating on me with. She hit me so hard the ornament broke, and I felt blood running from my scalp. I let go of Dennis and fell to the floor. But here’s the messed-up part: she actually hit me twice.

The first time I let go, but it was the second hit that broke the ornament. And Dennis thought that was the perfect chance to get on top of me. He punched me three or four times while I was down. The only reason he stopped was because Rose screamed.

I was on the floor, bleeding, trying to find my phone. It had fallen somewhere between the couch cushions, but I couldn’t find it. I knew I needed to call the police, but I wasn’t sure if the recording was still going. The police did come eventually.

Both Rose and a neighbor who heard the scene had called them. I was taken to the hospital. No skull fractures, thankfully, but I needed stitches on the back of my head, my lip, and my cheek. I told the police exactly what happened.

I told them my phone had been recording at the scene, but I didn’t know where it was. It was still between the couch cushions. The recording saved me. See, Rose and Dennis had told the police that I’d come in, seen her with another man, and instantly gone berserk.

They said I tried to choke Dennis to death, which they backed up with the bruises on his neck. They made themselves out to be the victims. But the recording showed the truth. It showed Dennis standing in front of me, touching me, and then striking me after I pushed him aside.

It caught the sound of the ornament hitting my head. It caught him punching me while I was on the ground. My story aligned with the recording. Theirs didn’t.

They were both arrested and eventually charged with battery and making false statements. Rose got an additional domestic violence charge. And apparently, Dennis resisted arrest when they came to get him. I started the divorce process before my stitches were even removed.

I made sure she was served. She didn’t say a word. She signed the papers right away. But I didn’t make the mistake of assuming she’d be cooperative.

When we got to the negotiation phase, she tried to milk me dry. I wanted her to get nothing. Our lawyer told me “nothing” was unlikely. But I refused to make things easy for her.

Not after what she did. We ended up in court. At the same time, she was going through her own legal process for the battery and domestic violence charges. She pleaded not guilty.

But the evidence against her was enough. The video never caught her striking me, but my injuries, my account, the scene the officers walked into, and the audio cues on the recording were enough. She was sentenced to six months. It’s likely she won’t serve the full term.

But knowing she was going to jail at all made me happier than I can properly express. Dennis got it much worse. He already had a record, including a previous violent offense. That explained everything.

He was far too eager to batter me when I was already down. Makes me wonder what kind of person my wife chose to cheat on me with. He got eighteen months. The divorce was delayed because her trial ran first.

But thanks to technology, we were able to hold our sessions with the judge while she was locked up. I could tell the judge wasn’t impressed that she was appearing in court from behind bars. I kept the house. There was no need to split our money since we had separate bank accounts from the start.

The judge decided there was no need for a fifty-fifty split. She wanted alimony. That didn’t happen either. I’d have gone mad if my paycheck was being garnished to fund a felon’s bank account.

The only thing she was entitled to was her cut from selling the house. I was going to sell it anyway. I couldn’t live there anymore, not with all those memories. That part is still pending, but I made sure she got her share because I needed her out of my life completely.

She has never apologized. She has never tried to explain herself. Not once. A part of me wishes she had.

At least then I’d know she felt some remorse. But no. I guess she stands behind her decision to try to smash my head open with what was essentially a ceramic brick. A part of me even wishes I had been hurt worse, so she would have been charged with something more severe.

I know that’s a dark thought. But after what she did to me, after she stood by and watched her affair partner beat me while I was down, I can’t help it. I’m doing better now. My injuries have healed, and I’m in good health.

I’m still jumpy when people move suddenly around me. Being ganged up on by my wife and her affair partner wasn’t on my to-do list for the year. But justice was served. Both of them ended up behind bars.

And I didn’t lose that much in the divorce. I pretty much lost nothing. I guess it helps when your wife and her affair partner nearly kill you when you confront her for cheating on you. Being cheated on is one thing.

That’s a heartache you can work through. But having your cheating wife’s affair partner attack you, and then having your cheating wife join in, that’s something else entirely. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I don’t know if there’s a moral to my story.

I couldn’t have seen the cheating coming when we were dating or in the early years of our marriage. It just showed up when it wanted to. But I know one thing for sure: being cheated on is never your fault. You can heal from it if you want to.

And that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
