Joy-Anna Duggar Reveals She’s Struggling Amid Brother Joseph’s Legal Troubles: ‘Super Hard and Super Dark’

Joy-Anna Duggar is opening up about the emotional toll her family has experienced since her brother Joseph Duggar was arrested, describing the past several months as one of the most difficult periods of her life.

During the May 27 episode of The Jinger & Jeremy Podcast, Joy-Anna, 28, joined her sister Jinger Duggar, 32, for an unusually candid conversation about the ongoing family crisis and how they have been coping since Joseph’s March arrest.

Joseph, 31, was arrested in March after being accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl during an alleged incident in 2020. He faces two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior and has pleaded not guilty.

 

He was released from custody on March 31 after posting a $600,000 bond. As part of his release conditions, Joseph was ordered to have no contact with his accuser, who is now 14, and no unsupervised contact with minors under 18, including his own four children and his two youngest siblings.

For Joy-Anna, the situation has been particularly difficult.

Jinger acknowledged that it had been a “hard season” for many members of their family. Joy-Anna went further, describing it as “the hardest time I’ve ever gone through.”

“I think we’re all grieving in different ways,” she said, explaining that the emotional weight of the situation can feel different from one day to the next.

Joy-Anna said that while certain aspects of the situation have become easier to handle with time, she continues to struggle.

“But I have really — I’ve really been struggling, honestly,” she admitted.

She also said that the experience has pushed her to rely more heavily on her faith than she had before. Although she acknowledged that there are no simple answers to everything her family is facing, she said that turning toward her faith has been one positive aspect of the difficult period.

Jinger noted that no one can truly prepare for a situation like the one their family is now experiencing.

Joy-Anna agreed, saying she has tried to deliberately focus on the positive things around her because the situation has felt overwhelming.

“I have to like grab on to the positive things, because it’s been super hard and super dark and really heavy,” she said.

At the same time, Joy-Anna explained that she has struggled with how much of the family situation she should discuss publicly.

 

The Duggar family has lived much of its life in the public eye, but Joy-Anna said she has become increasingly conscious of how repeatedly discussing the scandal can affect her family emotionally.

She explained that she has been trying to find the right balance between acknowledging what is happening and continuing to live her life without allowing the controversy to consume it.

“I’m doing okay,” Joy-Anna said, adding that she is “holding in there.”

She said she has also been questioning how much space she wants the situation to occupy in her life.

“I feel like it’s already impacted my family so much,” she explained. “How much room do I want to give to it in my life?”

Joy-Anna said that speaking about the case publicly can sometimes make the situation feel even more present.

“I feel like the more I talk about it publicly, the more it just gets, like, rubbed in our faces,” she said, adding that part of her simply wants to move forward.

That has created a difficult emotional balance for her: acknowledging the seriousness of what is happening while also trying to protect her own family life from being defined by the scandal.

Meanwhile, Joseph’s criminal case continues to move through the courts.

His latest hearing took place in Florida on May 18. Joseph did not attend the formal arraignment after previously waiving his right to appear, but his attorney appeared on his behalf and entered a not guilty plea.

 

His attorney also asked the court to modify one of Joseph’s pretrial release conditions concerning unsupervised contact with minors. The request specifically sought to lift that restriction regarding Joseph’s four biological children, whom he shares with his wife, Kendra Duggar.

Kendra, 27, is also facing criminal charges, although her legal case is separate from the allegations against Joseph in Florida. A family spokesperson has said that Kendra is not accused of participating in Joseph’s alleged conduct.

In Arkansas, both Joseph and Kendra face four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of second-degree false imprisonment.

As the legal proceedings continue, Joy-Anna’s comments provide a glimpse into how deeply the situation has affected the Duggar family behind the scenes.

Rather than presenting a simple explanation for how she feels, Joy-Anna acknowledged that she is still working through the emotions day by day.

For now, she appears focused on finding a way to support her loved ones, protect her own family and maintain some sense of normalcy while the legal process unfolds.

“It’s been super hard and super dark and really heavy,” she said, while emphasizing that she is still trying to hold on to the positive things and move forward.
