A new Soviet or Allied tank would appear on the battlefield, German anti-tank rounds would ricochet harmlessly off its sloping steel, and the high command would scramble for a solution. The result was a brutal cycle of improvisation that sent thousands of crews into combat in vehicles that were either dangerously 𝓮𝔁𝓹𝓸𝓼𝓮𝓭, mechanically unsound, or both.

But the vehicle’s curse was its unreliability. The final drive gears, already a weak point on the Panther, wore out faster on the Jagdpanther because the crew had to pivot the entire hull to engage targets. Only around 400 were ever built, and a staggeringly high percentage were destroyed by their own crews after breaking down on the battlefield.

Its crew of four fought in appallingly cramped conditions, but the vehicle was low to the ground, easy to conceal, and devastating in ambush positions. The wheel had turned full circle: from improvised stopgaps to engineering excess and back to simplicity, all driven by the same desperation.
