A shocking case in Wales has left investigators and the public searching for answers after a son admitted to hiding his mother’s body in a freezer for almost three years while continuing to receive money meant for her.
Christopher Phillips, 60, was sentenced to prison after admitting he kept the remains of his 89-year-old mother, Sylvia Phillips, inside a chest freezer at their home in Porthcawl, Wales. Authorities discovered the body during a welfare check in February 2026 after concerns were raised about her whereabouts.
Investigators said Sylvia died in March 2023, but her death was never reported. During the following years, Phillips continued receiving his mother’s pension and government payments, totaling more than £78,000 (about $105,000). He also reportedly misled others by claiming she had moved away and was no longer living at home.
The court heard that Phillips had been his mother’s caregiver for years and struggled to accept her death. His defense described a man unable to let go of his mother, while prosecutors highlighted the seriousness of concealing her death and continuing to claim financial support intended for her.
When police finally entered the home, they found Sylvia’s remains inside a freezer surrounded by personal items, including flowers and a birthday card. Authorities said the cause of her death has not been fully determined, and further investigations are expected.
