Fernando Alonso is staring down one of the biggest decisions of his legendary career, and according to a well-connected Spanish insider, the 45-year-old has already made up his mind about staying in Formula 1.
The two-time world champion was all smiles at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Aston Martin finally showed signs of life after a tough season. Thanks to 16 major chassis upgrades pushed through by design guru Adrian Newey, Alonso managed to crack Q2 for the first time this year.
That performance may have been exactly what the aging superstar needed to hear.
Sources close to the paddock suggest Alonso has been torn between retiring or sticking with Aston Martin through the new regulations. But Spanish F1 journalist Carlos Miquel, writing for MARCA, claims the driver’s recent attitude tells a different story.
Miquel says Alonso is eager to keep racing, but only if the car can deliver the thrill he craves. After the Hungarian GP, where Alonso reportedly ranked sixth in cornering speed and fifth in downforce according to GPS data, the veteran’s mood seemed to shift.
“My personal feeling is that he’s now closer to deciding to continue,” Miquel wrote, noting that Alonso’s smile and energy looked like the fire was back.
