For months, the public believed there was only one ransom demand connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. But investigators were quietly sitting on a second message—one they believed was so sensitive that revealing it too soon could have jeopardized the entire investigation.

 

Now, nearly five months after the 84-year-old vanished from her Arizona home, authorities have finally explained why they kept one of the case’s most disturbing details hidden.

Within days of Guthrie’s disappearance in early February, two messages believed to be from her kidnappers were reportedly sent to local media outlets.

The first demanded millions of dollars in ransom for her safe return.

The second delivered a far darker claim, allegedly stating that Guthrie had died shortly after being abducted—while also insisting her death had not been intentional.

 

Although investigators were aware of both messages almost immediately, only the first note was partially made public. The contents of the second remained under wraps until now.

According to law enforcement sources, the decision to withhold the second note was strategic—not accidental.

At the time, detectives were still trying to determine whether either message had actually come from the real kidnappers. Because they could not independently verify the claim that Guthrie had died, investigators feared making that information public could create confusion and send the investigation in the wrong direction.

Authorities were also concerned that announcing Guthrie’s alleged death would dramatically reduce public interest in the case, resulting in fewer tips from witnesses and members of the community.

But perhaps the biggest reason for the secrecy involved future interrogations.

Investigators wanted to preserve details from the note that only the true kidnapper—or kidnappers—would know. If those details became public, detectives would lose one of the strongest tools available when questioning potential suspects.

From the beginning, Guthrie’s disappearance alarmed investigators.

Blood was reportedly discovered on the front steps of her home, and family members revealed she suffered from medical conditions requiring daily medication. Those medications were left behind when she disappeared, raising immediate concerns that she may have been injured during the abduction.

Security footage from the property also captured a masked individual carrying what appeared to be a weapon while tampering with cameras outside the home shortly before Guthrie vanished.

Even so, investigators have never been able to confirm whether the claim made in the second note was true.

Despite months passing without an arrest, authorities insist the investigation remains active.

Federal and local investigators continue reviewing surveillance footage, analyzing cellphone records, examining DNA evidence, and following up on leads. Officials say the flow of public tips has slowed significantly, but detectives are still actively working the case.

To date, no suspect has been publicly identified, and investigators have not named any person of interest.

Nancy Guthrie’s daughter, Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has continued to publicly appeal for help.

In a recent emotional message, she urged anyone with even the smallest piece of information to contact investigators—even anonymously—saying her family refuses to give up hope.

With the mystery still unsolved and investigators continuing to protect key pieces of evidence, one thing remains clear: authorities believe someone knows exactly what happened to Nancy Guthrie—and they are still hoping that person will finally come forward.
