When Prince George turned 13 on July 22, Prince William and Kate Middleton did more than share a new photograph, as they had traditionally done for years.
They opened a small window into their private family life.
Filmed during the family’s Easter holiday in Cornwall, the birthday video shows George climbing across rocks, exploring the coastline and enjoying a few rare moments of freedom—far from ceremonies, palace balconies and the watchful eyes that follow a boy destined to become king.
Yet the most revealing moment took place on the sand.
George bent down and gently stroked Otto, the family’s chocolate-brown spaniel puppy, who was not yet a year old. The scene lasted only a few seconds, but it revealed that William, Kate and their three children were not the only ones included in the getaway.
Otto and Orla had come along too.
It was a charming decision, but hardly a simple one. Traveling with three children is already enough to turn luggage, transportation and scheduling into a complicated puzzle. Adding two energetic dogs means more responsibility, more preparation and undoubtedly more chaos.
Still, the Wales family chose to bring them.
Otto and Orla also appeared in Princess Charlotte’s 11th birthday video, lying calmly on the deck of a boat. Their presence suggested that the dogs were not merely well trained. They were treated as genuine members of the family—not pets to be left behind when everyone else set off on an adventure.
The Middleton family lives near William and Kate in Berkshire, and Kate’s parents and siblings are all dog lovers. Finding someone willing to care for Otto and Orla would likely have been easy.
But William and Kate seemingly made a different choice: when the family goes away, everyone goes.
They may have driven or taken the train to Cornwall with George, Charlotte, Louis and the two spaniels. For many parents, the thought alone would be exhausting. Yet for the Waleses, the inconvenience may have mattered less than the joy of leaving no one behind.
The birthday video therefore tells more than the story of George growing up.
It reveals a royal family holding tightly to something beautifully ordinary: children running across a beach, dogs resting on a boat, and a holiday where every member—whether walking on two legs or four—was included.
Sometimes, what brings a family closest is not the destination.
