For 31 years, the family of a young mother of four searched for answers after she was brutally killed in a Massachusetts park. Now, thanks to advanced DNA technology, investigators say they’ve finally identified the man responsible.
Celestina Perez was just 24 years old when her body was discovered in a ravine at Springfield’s Gurdon Bill Park on June 2, 1995. An autopsy later revealed she died from manual strangulation and blunt-force trauma to the head.
Despite extensive interviews and neighborhood searches, the case went cold. That changed when the Hampden District Attorney’s Office reopened the investigation, believing modern forensic science could unlock new leads.
According to officials, investigators reexamined blood evidence preserved from Perez’s clothing and developed a male DNA profile that matched Joseph James Ceravolo Jr. A second lab independently confirmed the same profile.
Prosecutors noted that Ceravolo lived within walking distance of the park at the time of the killing and had a documented history of assaultive behavior. He died of natural causes in 2013, meaning he can no longer face charges.
“If Ceravolo were alive today, he would be charged with the murder of Ms. Celestina Perez,” Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said in a statement.
Before the public announcement, Gulluni and his team met privately with Perez’s family. Her nephew, Jose Reyes, described the moment as the closing of a painful chapter.
“Today, my family closes a chapter that has remained open for 31 years,” Reyes said in a statement shared by Western Mass News. “Knowing the truth allows us to take a final step towards justice and begin to find a little peace.”
Gulluni emphasized that even without a courtroom verdict, the identification matters. “There is now an answer. There is no longer any mystery.
And after 31 years, the murder of Celestina Perez is no longer unresolved.”
He added, “Celestina Perez was a mother, a daughter, a sister, and an aunt. She was loved. Her life mattered.
This is why we never forget. Why we never quit.”
While this case is now closed, it raises a powerful question: how many other cold cases could modern DNA technology finally solve?
