A chilling new development has emerged in the case of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, who vanished from her Tucson home nearly two weeks ago. A retired homicide sergeant believes that recently released footage of a masked figure may provide crucial insights into her suspected abduction.
Troy Hillman, a former sergeant with the Phoenix Police Department, shared with Us Weekly that the eerie images and video captured by Nancy’s doorbell camera represent a significant breakthrough in the investigation. “This is a huge break,” he stated, emphasizing that while it doesn’t guarantee a resolution, it certainly opens new avenues for law enforcement.
The 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, described by her family as physically fragile yet mentally alert, was last seen on January 31 at her upscale residence. Concern escalated when she failed to attend a neighbor’s online church service the following day, prompting authorities to treat her disappearance as a potential kidnapping. The investigation intensified after a ransom note was reportedly found, demanding a substantial sum in cryptocurrency.
The released footage, which shows a suspect approaching her home, offers a wealth of details, from the individual’s clothing to their physical characteristics. Hillman noted that investigators can glean significant information, such as height and weight estimates, from the video. “They can assess the way the suspect carries their weapon and the type of gloves worn,” he explained.
In a related search effort, authorities uncovered a pair of black gloves in the vicinity of Nancy’s home, which are currently undergoing DNA testing. Meanwhile, TMZ reported on a video captured just five miles from her residence shortly after her disappearance, showing a man with a blurred face, carrying a black backpack and acting suspiciously near a fence.
As the investigation unfolds, local law enforcement is also seeking surveillance footage from neighbors, particularly from the nights surrounding Nancy’s disappearance. They are particularly interested in any sightings of a “suspicious vehicle” during specific time frames.
Adding to the complexity of the case, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department recently detained a person of interest, Carlos Palazuelos, for questioning. Although he has denied any involvement, the situation remains tense as investigators continue to pursue all leads.
Authorities are treating the ransom notes as credible and believe that Nancy’s abductor may also reside in Tucson. The FBI has stepped in, offering a $50,000 reward for information that could lead to Nancy’s safe return or the arrest of her captor.
As the search for Nancy continues, law enforcement remains hopeful, stating they are operating under the belief that she is still alive. What will the next steps reveal in this heart-wrenching case?
