More than 20 years have passed since Laci Peterson’s parents, Dennis and Sharon Rocha, faced the unimaginable tragedy of losing their daughter and her unborn child. The heart-wrenching case, which captivated the nation, began on Christmas Eve in 2002 when Laci disappeared at eight months pregnant, leading to a search that ended with the discovery of her and her son, Conner, in the San Francisco Bay in April 2003.
Laci’s husband, Scott Peterson, was arrested shortly after, and in November 2004, he was convicted of first-degree murder for Laci and second-degree murder for Conner. Sharon Rocha, who bravely testified during Scott’s trial, returned to the courtroom in December 2021 for his resentencing, where his death penalty was commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As of 2024, Scott’s case has been taken up by the Los Angeles Innocence Project, and his latest attempt to overturn his conviction, highlighted in the upcoming docuseries “Scott Peterson: The New Evidence,” was denied in April. Sharon firmly dismissed claims of new evidence, stating, “There is no new evidence.”
Laci was born on May 4, 1975, to Sharon and Dennis Rocha, who divorced when she was just two years old. Sharon moved with Laci and her older brother, Brent, to Modesto, California, while Dennis remained a loving father, even welcoming another daughter, Amy, from a later relationship. Sharon reminisced about Laci’s joyful nature, recalling, “I always knew she was going to be a good, happy baby.”
Sharon met Ron Grantski when Laci was just two years old, and he became a significant figure in their lives. He stood by Sharon during the trial and passed away in 2018, buried alongside Laci and Conner, as reported by The Modesto Bee.
When Laci first introduced Scott to her mother, Sharon was initially charmed by his romantic gestures, including a bouquet of roses. However, her instincts soon raised red flags. “I remember saying, as her mother, ‘I hope he’s not filling her with crap,’” she recounted, emphasizing the importance of trusting her gut feelings.
After Laci’s disappearance, both Sharon and Dennis became deeply involved in the search efforts. Dennis, while remaining mostly out of the media spotlight, expressed his suspicions about Scott, particularly after learning of his 𝒶𝒻𝒻𝒶𝒾𝓇. “He was caught having an 𝒶𝒻𝒻𝒶𝒾𝓇.

In a 2017 interview, Sharon reflected on the difficulty of suspecting someone she had once considered family. “This is somebody that’s been a member of your family for several years now,” she shared, grappling with the guilt of such suspicions.
Tragedy struck again in 2018 when both Dennis and Ron passed away. Sharon expressed a bittersweet sense of closure, stating, “Laci loved her dad, and now they will be together again.”
The family confronted Scott once more during his resentencing, with Sharon recalling the last time she saw Laci, emphasizing the pain of loss. “Two things will never change,” she told Scott. “Laci and Conner will always be dead, and you will always be their murderer.”
Following Scott’s resentencing, his legal team sought a new trial, claiming juror misconduct. However, a judge ruled against this request in December 2022, bringing relief to Laci’s family, who feared reliving the trauma of the trial.
Sharon’s determination to keep Laci’s memory alive led her to participate in the Netflix docuseries “American Murder: Laci Peterson.” In interviews, she has remained steadfast in her belief that Scott is guilty, stating, “Twelve people found him guilty of murder, but he doesn’t admit to that.”
