More than two decades after the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner, Laci’s mother is once again speaking out against renewed efforts to overturn Scott Peterson’s conviction.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Sharon Rocha dismissed claims that newly presented evidence could exonerate her former son-in-law, saying the repeated legal challenges have only reopened painful memories for her family.
“It Is Never Ending”
Rocha described the latest developments as emotionally exhausting.
Reacting to another petition filed on Scott Peterson’s behalf, she said the continued attempts to revisit the case feel like “ripping the scab off a wound.”
According to Rocha, she has grown accustomed to hearing claims that new evidence has surfaced, but she remains convinced nothing presented so far changes the outcome of the case.
Latest Petition Was Rejected
Earlier this year, attorneys working with the Los Angeles Innocence Project filed a petition seeking to overturn Peterson’s conviction.
The filing included multiple claims involving witness statements, scientific analysis, and alternative theories surrounding Laci Peterson’s disappearance and death.
However, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Hill denied the petition, ruling that the information presented did not qualify as new, admissible, or material evidence capable of changing the verdict. Peterson’s legal team has indicated it intends to continue pursuing additional appeals.
Family Says the Verdict Was Correct
Rocha says she has never doubted Peterson’s responsibility for the deaths of her daughter and grandson.
She believes the repeated legal filings not only fail to present meaningful new evidence but also force the family to relive one of the darkest chapters of their lives every time the case returns to the headlines.
Rocha also questioned whether limited legal resources should instead be directed toward individuals whose innocence has not yet been fully examined.
Case Continues to Draw Attention
The latest legal challenge coincides with a new documentary revisiting the Peterson case and presenting arguments that investigators overlooked important evidence during the original investigation.
Supporters of Peterson argue advances in forensic science and additional witness accounts deserve further review, while prosecutors and Laci’s family maintain the evidence presented at trial remains overwhelming.
