F1 star says four-time world champion's team move forced him to leave

In a heartfelt revelation, F1 star Sergio Perez has shared how the arrival of a four-time world champion forced him to seek a new team. The seasoned driver, currently racing for Cadillac, reflects on a pivotal moment in his career that changed everything.

Sergio “Checo” Perez, who has celebrated six grand prix victories—including five during his time at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen—has a rich history in Formula 1. From 2014 to 2020, he was a key figure at the Silverstone-based Racing Point team, witnessing its evolution from Force India.

However, as Racing Point transitioned to Aston Martin, Perez found himself in a precarious position. With Lance Stroll, the owner’s son, assured of his seat, the team sought a high-profile addition to mark their new chapter. That’s when Sebastian Vettel, a four-time world champion, became available after Ferrari announced 2020 would be his last season with them.

Reflecting on his departure, Perez expressed his sadness during an appearance on the High Performance podcast. “It was tough because I had a three-year contract with the team, and I thought my future was secure there,” he shared. “I felt a strong connection to the team, having helped in its acquisition and development.”

He acknowledged the competitive nature of the sport, stating, “When a champion like Sebastian becomes available, I understood the decision Lawrence had to make. There’s no loyalty in this game.” Despite the disappointment, Perez maintains a positive relationship with Aston Martin and emphasizes his focus on performing well on the track.

After leaving Racing Point, he joined Red Bull just in time to contribute to their back-to-back constructors’ championships in 2022 and 2023. Yet, the memories of his time at Aston Martin linger. “If a good opportunity arises for next year, I’ll seize it. If not, I’ll take a break and come back stronger,” he noted, hinting at his determination to keep pushing forward.

As Perez continues to navigate the challenges of racing with Cadillac, fans are left wondering what the future holds for the talented driver. Will he find a way back to the front of the pack?
